Lobby Lounge, Conrad Centennial Singapore – Afternoon Tea Sets

Language of Flowers - Afternoon Tea Set
Language of Flowers – Afternoon Tea Set

“She gets too hungry for dinner at eight” croons old blue eyes. (Frank Sinatra)

And, that’s precisely the reason the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell, started the trend of the afternoon tea back in around 1840 that lasted to this day. It’s no surprise that you can see many well-heeled ladies sipping afternoon tea at plush hotel lounges to keep up with the latest gossip!

Over at the lobby lounge of Conrad Centennial hotel, you can enjoy a beautiful flower themed afternoon tea with live piano music playing in the background. The experience begins with a refreshing welcome drink before you’re asked to select your afternoon tea or coffee. They have a selection of 18 teas to choose from – from fruit teas to Chinese and Herbal/Wellness infusions to exquisite Ceylon Teas. It was a difficult decision but, in the end, we settled for a lovely Irish Whiskey Cream and Orange Pekoe black tea from the Uva region.

The sweet and savoury pastries were presented on a lovely two-tiered cake stand with floral names like Rosella, Saffron, Mimosa and Chrysanthemum. The sweet pastries were undoubtedly the highlights of the tea set.  They were lovely to behold and were adorned with petite edible flowers which are quite unique. Admittedly, their savouries and scones were not as outstanding.

Come late July, they will be changing their flower-themed menu to a honey-infused one. Judging by the creative pastries we had, there is good reason for a revisit especially when you can get 50% discount with your Citi Card.

Coffee Lounge, Goodwood Park Hotel – Taiwan Porridge A La Carte Buffet

Taiwan Porridge Ala Carte Buffet
(Clockwise) Warm porridge with sweet potato, Braised Pork Belly, Steamed Minced Pork with Salted Egg, Stir-fried Scallops with Bok Choy in XO Sauce, Fried Omelette with Chye Poh and Handmade Beancurd with Fragrant Vegetables

The thing we like about the Goodwood Park hotel is how they can be counted on to preserve certain traditions like their Taiwan Porridge buffet that’s been going since 1984!

There are over 40 dishes on the menu.  Some, like their line up of casserole dishes, like the 梅菜猪肉Braised Pork with ‘Mui Choy’ are presented on the buffet line while others are prepared to order.

Having sampled a selection of their most popular dishes, we would recommend the Braised Pork Belly in Dark Soya Sauce and the Handmade Beancurd with fragrant vegetables. The tofu is made in-house and has a very nice eggy flavour.  Leslie called it “fried chawanmushi”, since it is essentially home made soy milk custard which is subsequently deep-fried.  For seafood, their Fried Black Pomfret is well worth ordering.  The Stir-fried Scallops with Bok Choy in XO sauce featured rather generous-sized scallops.  We were amused that the dish is listed under the “vegetable” section.

Basilico, Regent Singapore – Italian Buffet

14 Basilico - cheese and ham
Buffet line of fresh and soft cheeses and Italian Tomatoes Bottom: Selection of different flavour honey, cold cuts and cheeses

If you love Italian food, this is one buffet you would surely want to visit. We were there for lunch and were treated to a wonderful spread of Italian cold cuts, cheeses, pasta, pizza and desserts.

As cheese lovers, we naturally gravitated to the cheese section first! They have a good range of Italian cheeses, ranging from fresh cheeses like burratas, mozzarellas and a lovely truffle ricotta to hard cheeses like aged pecorinos and primosale.  The cheese selection is excellent and they have a range of accompaniment to go with it.  The Primosale al Pepe was our favourite of the lot!

The most underrated section I think is the tomatoes! There are 4-5 different varieties to choose and the little cherry tomatoes were so wonderfully sweet! It is like eating ripened grapes. Chef Valerio tells me that they bring in all their produce from Italy at least once every three weeks.

Not to be missed is their antipastis and cold cuts where you get freshly shaved Parma Ham, salami and other hams.

I really like that they have a selection of Olive Oils to choose from, including their own range that is specially formulated by Timperio for them.  Of which, we recommend the White Truffle Olive Oil if you like a sharp and zesty olive oil.  I could sit there all day constructing little bites of shaved Parma ham on melon or bread, drizzled with olive oil or honey, chased by a cherry tomato.

Over at the hot food section is where you’d see chefs making pizzas, pastas and ragouts. We recommend the Wagyu Lasagna for delicious layers of cheese, béchamel sauce and beef!

17 Basilico Hot Food
Hot food section featuring freshly prepared dishes including pizzas and pastas

For dessert, you’ll find a lovely assortment of pastries, tarts, different mousse in shot glasses and pudding. The highlight though is their gelato that is made in-house. We liked the mango, mixed berries and vanilla flavours. We’re told that they’re constantly changing the flavours and even had a Parmesan Ham and cheese flavour before.

18 Basilico Dessert
Desserts

They may not have the largest buffet spread but the focus on good ingredients makes the buffet worth having. Dinner is a semi-buffet style in that you can order a main from the a la carte menu and help yourself to the appetizer and dessert buffet line. It also comes with access to the renown Cheese room where over 60 different cheeses are featured! Something we look forward to experiencing soon.

Asian Market Cafe, Fairmont Singapore – Pan Asian Halal buffet

Seafood selection includes Irish Oysters, Crabs, Prawns, Scallops and Salmon Sashimi
Seafood on ice: Irish Oysters, Crabs, Prawns, Scallops and Salmon Sashimi (bottom right) Mediterranean dips and pita bread

If oysters are your thing and you just can’t get enough of them, then this buffet is where you can get your fill of fresh Irish oysters* together with cold crabs, prawns and other seafood! The Sri Lankan Mud Crab are also featured in their Chilli Crab dish which is one of the signature dishes on the cooked food line. The crabs might not have claws the size of your hands, but they are meaty and sweet.

Signature Laksa, Chilli Crab and Cereal Crayfish
Signature Laksa, Chilli Crab and Cereal Crayfish

One thing you should not miss is their signature Laksa made with quality hae bee (dried shrimp) specially sourced from Indonesia. You can tell they use a generous amount of it by the quality of the broth with its lovely crustacean flavour. The cereal crayfish is also another dish to look out for.  Try to keep an eye out for when they top up the dish so you can get it fresh and hot!

Live stations: Satay and Roti Prata
Live stations: Satay and Roti Prata

We also enjoyed the Chicken and Mutton Satay which were juicy and delicious. Although they pan sear the satay instead of grilling it over charcoal, the mesmerizing aroma still permeates the whole restaurant!  At the roti prata station, you can request for egg, cheese, onion or plain prata.  It is good to have freshly made prata but it isn’t something I would spend too many calories on.

Desserts
Desserts: Durian Penyat, Ondeh Ondeh cake, Portuguese Egg Tart and Burnt Cheesecake

Remember to save some space for desserts. Their Durian Penyat is very good as is their crispy Portuguese Egg tart and Burnt cheesecake, all made inhouse.

Atrium Restaurant, Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium –  International Halal Buffet

10 Atrium Live Stations

The highlight of the buffet at the Holiday Inn Atrium is their Indian station. Their in-house prata is light and fluffy and has a lovely ghee aroma and it is served with a selection of very good South Indian as well as North Indian curries.  There is another live station serving Chicken rice which is also worth sampling. Their satay is grilled on the spot and dunked into the satay kuah to prevent it from drying out.  It is your standard satay, but with Malay style satay now going for 90cents a stick, it makes sense to have an extra few if you love satay!

11 Atrium Hot Food
Clockwise from top left: Seafood ice, Roast Beef, Chilli Baby Lobster and Indian Curry

Being an International Buffet, they have the cold seafood station, western station, local station as well as seasonal station where they would feature seasonal cuisine.  Over at the local station, their Chilli Baby Lobsters* are very popular, although, I would always complain that the yield from baby lobsters is very small!  Still, it is one of the most popular stations as you would expect.

Potong Ice Cream in rainbox bread,
Clockwise from top left: Potong Ice Cream in rainbox bread, Bingsu Cendol, Tiramisu and Chocolate cake, Kueh Dadar

For dessert, remember to get your Potong Ice cream in a slice of rainbow bread so you can reminisce about the good old days! The Nonya Kuehs were pretty average overall but the Kueh Dadar is worth saving some space for.
