We must have been living under a rock for the past three years! We’d heard of TungLok Teahouse, but it wasn’t until this food trail that we finally stepped in.

We were immediately charmed by the retro 1970s Hong Kong dim sum décor. Everything from the vintage tiles, nostalgic posters, and warm, old-school lighting created a cosy, time-travel feel. But the biggest surprise was their automated tray delivery system!

While we’ve seen similar setups at some sushi restaurants, this was the first time we’d seen it used to deliver dim sum baskets. Come to think of it, this sushi-style conveyor belt makes perfect sense. It allows the kitchen to send freshly steamed dim sum straight to your table quickly. It’s a fun, efficient, and truly memorable way to enjoy dim sum!

The quality of the dim sum at TungLok Teahouse is very good overall. While some items are prepared at their central kitchen, others, like their steamed rice rolls, are freshly made on-site. A standout is their Signature Cheong Fun. Prawns are first encased in a crispy rice crust before being wrapped in silky, freshly steamed rice rolls.

We also really enjoyed the Poached Shrimp Dumplings served with a spicy chilli sauce. The dumplings were plump and juicy, and the sauce had a well-balanced mix of spicy, salty, and tangy flavours that complemented the dish beautifully.

The restaurant is very well attended, so we recommend calling ahead to reserve before going.

Tien Court, Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore

Clockwise from top left S$7.80++ per plate of 3 pcs: Steamed Crystal Dumpling with Yam Paste and Pine Nut, Teochew Steamed Crystal Dumpling (Dried Shrimp, Preserved Radish and Jicama), Pan-fried Teochew Chai Kueh (Chive & Shrimp), Pan-fried Chicken and Black Olive Vegetable Bun, Deep-fried Glutinous Rice Dumpling (Sesame & Peanut)

Nestled within Copthorne King’s Hotel, Tien Court has been a cornerstone of Teochew cuisine since its establishment in 1989. Under the helm of award-winning Master Chef Lui Wing Keung, Tien Court continues to showcase the essence of authentic Teochew cuisine, with a strong emphasis on natural flavours and fresh ingredients.

It is also one of the few restaurants where you’ll find a dim sum menu focused specifically on Teochew-style dumplings. If you’re expecting the usual har gow and siew mai, you might be disappointed. But any Teochew stalwart will be delighted by the Teochew dumplings here!

Perhaps the most iconic of Teochew dumplings is the crystal dumpling (水晶包 shuǐ jīng bāo.). It is known for its translucent, sticky, and chewy skin made from tapioca flour. Tien Court’s rendition is beautifully executed. We especially enjoyed the savoury version filled with turnip, dried shrimps, and peanuts—ingredients that reflect classic Teochew flavours.

The yam paste version is accented with fresh orange peel. It is another traditional Teochew touch, though we did miss the fragrance of the fried shallot oil. Another Teochew favourite, the Pan-fried Teochew Chai Kueh, was also packed with flavour and well-balanced. As a creative twist, the Deep-fried Glutinous Rice Dumpling deviates from the usual round sesame ball. Instead, the sesame seeds are hidden inside the pastry and shaped like a samosa.

The restaurant offers a nostalgic dining experience that evokes the elegance of a bygone era. Its interior exudes classic oriental charm, featuring vintage décor, a spacious main dining hall, and private rooms named after renowned cities in China. It’s a classic Teochew restaurant worth visiting.

Located within the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, Jiang-Nan Chun stands as an epitome of refined Cantonese cuisine. The name of the restaurant literally means “Spring in Jiang Nan”. This is artfully brought to life through its décor that evokes serene riverside pavilions and lush landscapes of China’s historic Jiang Nan region in spring. It exudes an atmosphere of tranquil elegance.

Renowned for its authentic Cantonese dishes, Jiang-Nan Chun offers an exquisite and indulgent dim sum experience. Each dim sum offering here showcases meticulous handmade artistry and premium ingredients.

The attention to detail is palpable. It is exemplified by their signature Steamed Boston Lobster Dumpling, which features a vibrant beetroot-coloured skin shaped into an elegant three-petal fold. Their Crystal Mushroom Dumpling is equally impressive, artfully topped with intricate, lacy bamboo pith. Even the siew mai is elevated, pairing a Steamed Pork and Shrimp Dumpling with Baby Abalone that is carefully handpicked to be uniformly sized.

If you’re looking for high-end dim sum to impress, this is the place to experience both exceptional quality and elegant presentation.

Canton Paradise

Clockwise from top left: Baked Golden Custard Pastry S$8.30++, Baked Charcoal Mini Egg Tart $6.80++, Steamed Mushroom with Truffle Dumpling S$10.30++, Shrimp Roe Noodle (Dry) S$7.80++, ‘Ting Zai’ Style Congee S$11.80++, Crispy BBQ Honey Pork Bun S$8.60++, Crispy Rice Roll with BBQ Pork Filling S$8.90++

Canton Paradise, located in Plaza Singapura, offers a casual yet refined dining experience focused on authentic Hong Kong-style Cantonese cuisine. Known for its all-day dim sum, the menu also features congee, noodles and classic Hong Kong roasts.

The most eye-catching is their Crispy Rice Roll with BBQ Pork Filling. The vibrant beetroot-coloured cheong fun not only creates a striking visual contrast but also offers a delightful textural contrast with the crispy fried rice roll encasing the sweet, tender char siu.

Equally impressive is the Steamed Mushroom with Truffle Dumpling. It features a translucent, chewy skin that perfectly complements the fragrant truffle-scented jicama filling. We also enjoyed their Baked Charcoal Mini Egg Tarts. The deep black crust beautifully contrasts with the bright yellow egg custard inside. It’s both a delicious and visually stunning treat.

Beyond dim sum, you can also order their ‘Ting Zai’ Style Congee, which features silky smooth rice porridge with chockful of ingredients hidden inside. Their classic Hong Kong style Shrimp Roe Noodle (Dry) were flavourful!
