Hong Ji Claypot Bak Kut Teh: Northenmost Blog Post

Singaporeans love to complain.  The most frequent complain that I get concerning the ieat hawker app is that there isn't enough eateries up North.  OK, the reason there aren't many red pins on the ieat hawker map is that there really isn't that many places up North that someone from the South would bother to drive up to eat.  Seriously.  Ever since I released the App last October I have made a concerted effort to seek out eateries up North.  So far, I have added, Chong Pang Nasi Lemak, You Huak White Bee Hoon and Yishun 928 Laksa which is already in the latest update of the App.  Although they are good, they are not quite as spectacular as a lot of the eateries further South.

See, I am complaining.  Singaporeans love to complain.

Anyway, I drove all the way to Marsiling Lane for this Bak Kut Teh because when I posed the question of what to eat up North on Facebook, this was the stall that got mentioned quite a few times.

The special thing about this Bak Kut Teh is that it is the herbal type that is served in claypots instead of the peppery type commonly found here.  It was a pretty good meal, but it just didn't have that extra something to get you to drive all the way up North to try it.  And guess what,  at the end of meal, when I asked the stall for their namecard I found out that they have a branch at Bedok, just near my clinic!  So you see, I keep telling you, its hard to find something compelling up North!  Sorry Northerners!

Conclusion

A nice Bak Kut Teh to try if you are around the northern part of Singapore.  I am still searching for something really compelling up North that is worth the calories and fuel. 4/5

Doc,

I am being complaing to my wife ever since move to Yishun and woodlands, I am geyland boy, the food in the north is terrible and even my son after a few exercusion with me to the south fo food, also agreed. North people just can bare with lousy food.

Anyway, I already stay there for 15 years, there is this Parata in Woodlands Old bus hawker center first row os shop facing the road. They have the best curry for prata.

Open early 3am and by 8.30am earn enought and closed shop.

Try the Sandine special also add another 50 cents. Long queue.

go and visit, it is the best i tasted, as many prata just don;t bother to do good curry!

Thanks for the recommendation! But 3am to 8.30am! Haiz! How is the prata itself?

Suggestion: Taste of Thailand @ Yishun Industrial Park A. Not sure if you can classify them as Hawker Food but it's Cze Char - Thailand at good price!

Yeah I recently moved to Admiralty and wow, it's bad. There's just one coffeshop within 2 km of my HDB block and it's really terrible food-wise. Even at Admiralty mrt there's just fast food and food courts. The North is barren...

Haha, Keropokman and I tried this last month after we visited Bengawan Solo's factory in Woodlands. Agree that there's nothing stellar about this bak kut teh. It's a decent and generous bowl, but there are better choices elsewhere (yeah south). I think this might be the one that Daniel Ang says the owner paid $10K for the recipe from Malaysia.

Another Hong Ji branch at Seletar Garden, Yio Chu Kang Road.

Doc,

Go on Sunday or Public hoilday if you are not opening your clinics, , the prata is normal but the curry is very very good espcially the sardine special just add another 50 cents,

Trust me(Steve Jobs when his demo don't work} , I love to eat, this shop got the best curry!

First row, lots of people queuing with two malay drinks stalls serving his customers.

Nothing much to eat in the north, the hawker center is also full of Malaysia style hawker beacuse of lots of malaysian worker working in nearby factories and shipyards coming very early in the monring to eat.

On more thing

There is one Seafood Soup at the 2nd last row got lots of awards and is a bit expansive but very good soup indeed.

Try to explore this hawker center in the evening time for lots of malaysia style food.

Hope to marry a southern Girl next life and never live in the North again!

The seafood soup is indeed the most popular stall in Woodlands Old bus hawker center. You should try the pig trotter in the same stall as well.

The everyday lunchtime queue is 30-45 mins! It's expensive but there is still a super long queue. There are some other decent stalls there but cant really compare to the seafood soup stall....

Now you got me really excited!

To add to the tease, the bowl is only half-full because the stall owner claims his precious soup is brewed using Japanese scallops, and no refill is allowed.

Overall, the North is indeed barren, but further north from Woodlands is where the true action is... The 阿胜乐乐火锅 at Permas Jaya is delicious!

Re Mutton Soup The real taste is not the meat with the soup. if you are gung ho to taste the mutton brain, that is real tasty as soft as tofu. just like pork, certain part the mutton are tender and soft. you have only scape the surface....try harder

Hi Doc,

You might want to check out the Kueh Chap at Block 123, Yishun St 11. There is only one coffee shop at that block. They are closed on Wednesday. Try to go between 8am to 12pm before they sell most of the things out.

i have to agree tat food in the north cannot be compare to some of the area in sg.. it use to have lotsa of good food.. eg nasi padang, cha kway tiao.. and even mutton soup.. due to the growing of yishun.. rental went up.. some of the stall owner decide to end their business instead..

i live in yishun for more than 25years..so there is alot of changes.. believe me there is still some food tat can bring u the taste of home tat u cannot get else where...

anyway i have a recommendation of duck rice which is newly setup at khatib central.. its the taste of the old teochew granny style.. love the braised duck by itself without the sauce.. the tenderness of the duck and the duck fat really bring out the aroma of the braised.. Doc you might wanna make a trip to try it..

To add on to this coffee shop is a wanton noodle stall next to Kueh Chap stall. Their wanton noodle is very special, gravy is dark in colour with special chilly sauce. Have a try if you are at that area.
Also in the morning till about 2-3pm.

@damage, is it in the kopitiam next to the fishmongers? The braised duck is good all right but the "lor" is not up to the mark, a bit diluted and not "pang". At Khatib there is a western food stall (Big Bitez) in the kopitiam facing NTUC. My kakis love the steak there and we would be there most Tues to have it. Mashed potato is creamy. Open after 12noon and closed alternate Mon. Last Mon was closed.
