Minced meat with Pickled Radish - Lunch Buffet $9.90 nett
The time has come at last to tell you about Teochew Muay. This restaurant is opened by my good friend SCS Butter who is one of the few makan kakis I knew before I started blogging. SCS Butter is a foodie (I think you can tell from his photo) and has been the source of many great recommendations on this blog. The reason I have not told you about his restaurant earlier is because we needed some time to iron out some details of the restaurant. I have been grappling with the dilemma of wanting to help a friend but at the same time needing the food to be of a certain standard before recommending it, so I am happy now that it is ready to be blogged.
After four months of operations, I think SCS Butter has finally settled on a compelling proposition. The initial idea was to have a Teochew Muay restaurant where you can enjoy Teochew Muay in air-con comfort. At the beginning, they were charging ala-carte prices. But after a while, he decided that a buffet style eatery was the way to go. So now, we have a $9.90 nett All-you-can-eat Teochew Porridge Lunch Buffet and a $13.80 nett Dinner Buffet with Bak Kut Teh which really is value for money and would satisfy (a lot of) Singaporeans who want to eat Teochew Porridge in comfort.
Mei Chai Kou Rou - Lunch Buffet $9.90 nett
But just being value for money is not enough. We needed a few dishes which are crying out to be eaten. I would say that in general, most of the dishes are competent but I want to highlight a few which I really enjoy. One of the dishes I really like is the minced meat with pickled radish which is part of the lunch buffet. The tangy, savoury and sweet dish goes really well with the hot porridge and I finished a whole portion by myself in addition to the other dishes. 4.25/5
The buffet spread will have your usual Teochew Porridge favourites like Chai Buay (preserved veg), braised Duck, Braised Pork Belly and Tawkwa, Chai Poh Omelette, Steamed Sotong etc. There are of course some hits and others which need a bit more tweaking. The Mei Chai Kou Rou 3/5 is one of those that desperately needs a makeover. But hey, it's a buffet, so you can try them all and ask for a 2nd helping of those dishes you like. One thing about the restaurant which will appeal to health conscious diners is that the food here is not overly oily, so you will go back to the office after lunch without having to take some Eno.
ieat Omelette $12 ($6 for ieatishootipost readers)
My personal favourite is the minced meat chye poh omelette which is an off the menu item. What is on the menu is a very shiok minced meat, chai poh and chilli sauce that is served with homemade tofu. But one day I asked SCS to put that same topping over a freshly fried omelette and it has been the one dish that I always look forward to eating when I am there. This is a special order and normally costs $12. However, if you are there for the buffet, you can order it for an extra $6 if you simply tell him that you want the "ieat omelette". It goes really well with the hot porridge and I guarantee that you won't be able to stop nibbling on it! 4.5/5
Da Chang Luo Mi (Glutinous Rice Sausage) $12 ala carte menu
Da Chang Luo Mi (Glutinous Rice Sausage) is a Teochew classic that is not easily found nowadays. SCS Butter is not Teochew (a point which I keep poking him with but my finger just sinks into his thick skin) but his partner happens to be the owner of a well-established Teochew restaurant which is why this item is on their menu. The glutinous rice is very flavorful and is packed with dried shrimps, mushrooms and peanuts. The peanuts are a dead giveaway for it being a Teochew dish!. 4.25/5 Aside from this, they also have steamed fish on the ala-carte menu which you can order with prices starting from $12.90.
Bak Kut Teh: Part of $13.80 nett Dinner Buffet
They have recently introduced their Dinner Buffet at $13.80 which includes free flow Bak Kut Teh. I have tried the Bak Kut Teh and it was not bad. The stock is sweet and doesn't have the porky smell. It just needed a dash more of white pepper powder to give it some kick. According to SCS Butter, they try to cater for kids, so they did not want to make it overly spicy. However, if you want it peppery, just asked them to spike it with pepper before they serve it to you. 4/5
Steamed Tofu with Pork Floss: Part of $13.80 Dinner Buffet
Tofu with Pork Floss is one of my wife's must order dish whenever we eat Teochew Porridge. It is just one of those dishes that marry so well with hot porridge. They usually serve this dish cold but SCS Butter has decided to steam the tofu before topping it with the soy sauce and pork floss. It is also very good and only available during the Dinner Buffet. 4.25/5
Don't let the photo of SCS Butter fool you. I know it looks as if he might poke you with his chopsticks if you complain about his food, but Joe (SCS) and his wife Tracy are lovely people and you will be well looked after at the restaurant. When you get there, just let them know you are an ieatishootipost reader and enjoy their hospitality! If he doesn't look after you, just email me and I will post his other more compromising photos all over the internet.
Conclusion
I still remember the good old days when as teenagers we used to eat Teochew Porridge at Orchard Hotel for something like $15++. I wonder why there aren't more restaurants like Teochew Muay around because all-you-can-eat Teochew Porridge in a nice air con environment is something I know a lot of Singaporeans would really enjoy!

I can vouch for both the quality and value of the food. Eaten there 3 times. Just gets better and better. The thing I like about SCS Butter is that he is always tweaking his recipes and menu to improve them. I'll be taking my colleagues there soon : )
Awesome! TCM Buffet seemed to only exist in the hotels, but now at least I can settle for this spot in future. Regularly.
The braised duck is very good! Wanna try the ieat omelette on my next visit.
Free flow BKT somemore?! Win already. Sounds like super value for $$$ to me. Gonna bring my family & friends there really soon!
"If he doesn't look after you, just email me and I will post his other more compromising photos all over the internet."
Wah lao, blackmail!
Great that they reinstated car parking along Mohd Sultan. We shouldn't have to worry about taking a $70 risk, like I did when visiting Teochew Muay =x shh...
love the chai por omelette and braised duck!..he could do with a chilli sauce like Teo Heng's and I'll be there every week! :)
ieat confirm they open for sunday lunch?
Our party of five enjoyed our set dinner there a few months back. Besides the good food, dinner on a Sunday evening was leisurely, relaxed and we had a great time catching up. Seems like a good time to revisit for some new dishes listed here and others we did not try.
Open seven days now.
Open seven days now.
The Lou Mi roll looks good!!
I can never eat BKT without cut chili in black sauce! No need pepper, just show me the chili. =)) BKT is really super good with the real chili, because once you stir the soup a bit, all the hot oil comes out. Few slices is enough to make one tear, spicy hot with boiling hot, powerful.
Is the ramen really over? So sad.
I have yet to try the food there. Will check it out soon.
Agree with Byron on the chilli. I hope they make a good teochew style sng nee chou. Vinegar chilli. That would complete the deal man! : )
Mai tu liao. I got teochew muay craving for long time. Will go soon to try.
Haha my office is quite near there so I have lunch at Teochew Muay at least once a fortnight. At $9.90nett, a buffet that includes braised duck, large pig intestines, braised belly pork, and fresh sotong is a bit of a market spoiler. It's now become quite difficult for me to justify spending $10 or more for lunch at other places.
My cohort just had our Porridge Buffet lunch ar Cafe Windsor $11.80++. For Senior Citizens they discount us $2/pax. Very good spread plus chinese tea/fruits/ice cream.
Will certainly try SCS Butter's Restaurant in July. Is Happy Mummy helping there too?.
From your description seems like ala carte all you can eat but you mentioned it is a buffet. So which is it pls? 'cos I think TCM will not be that great as a buffet.
Hi, not sure if we can see the buffet menu so we can see the difference and decide to go for lunch or dinner.

been to teochew muay, the food is good and is great comfort food after a hard day's work ! with so many choices ....hmmm, i better bring my family there before the crowd comes....
SCS Butter, I miss the cripsy fried pork dish!
My favorite dishes are cai poh egg, bitter gourd, braised duck and the brinjal... Superb for my taste...
Myself and my colleagues make it a point to frequent TCM weekly as we work at UE Square... Not been there for the past 2 weeks though...
Thks Happy Mummi! : )
I remember bringing it up the last time I ate. And now you already have it. Thats what I call listening to customers' feedback. Look forward to trying it. : )
Hi everyone, good evening. Can anyone define a good Teochew Porridge (i mean Muay not the dishes)
I been to a few famous Teochew Porridge stalls / shop but none really have the best Muay with thich armd ( porridge water ) I think I can cook better muay, but of course not those dishes. Sorry I don't mean to be mean.
I personally prefer the creamy teochew porridge 'armd'. My dad who is a teochew ah hia prefers the less creamy version. My mom likes all versions, as she simply adores porridge (she's a cantonese). So its really difficult to say coz we all have our preferences. But I think a good teochew porridge should not be overcooked. The grains should still be intact despite being soft and thoroughly cooked.
Like Leslie mentioned,
Must have "Swa ga Hai" (Mountain & Sea)- Rice grains must be intact.
Hi Anonymous, a good Teochew porridge, as Holy Drummer mentioned, must have the Mountain and Sea. The rice must be intact and not split. The arrm (rice water) must be smooth and starchy and the whole bowl must have a nice rice fragrance. Usually the expert Teochew porridge sellers will mix two types of rice together to achieve the best results. Old rice and new rice have different properties. To get that nice intact grain, you have to use old rice wheras the newer rice, with the higher water content is more readily turned into starch. If you eat Taiwanese Porridge, they will use short grain rice which results in more sticky porridge.
My wife and I decided to give this place a try after reading the blog. Mr SCS butter had a tough day with the increased volume of business and was extremely apologetic about it. We tried about half of what was available for the buffet. I like the BKT, flavourful and generous. The steam eggs with salted and century eggs is nice. The peanuts was not canned version, and comes with just a little crunch. Mei cai and the cai xin with mince meat was not quite the way I like it. I prefer mei cai a little more salty with bigger pieces of meat. My wife prefers a sweeter version. Not easy to please both of us. Cai xin with mince meat was an interesting touch, but maybe we could also have just cai xin. There is this taste of canned cai xin that makes porridge tastes good. Mince pork with salted beans would be a nice too. I could just do with cai xin, mince pork with beans and porridge.
The great thing about this place is the belief in good service and SCS butter's personal touch. SCS butter had to turn customers away when he felt service standard was falling below his expectation.
I would go back again a while later when the "ieat" bump dies down. For those who didn't get the full experience, do try this restaurant again in future
yes place was packed when we went for lunch today!, my table loved the braised duck and steamed squid. The stuffed intestine with glutinous rice was popular too! mentioned to scs butter if they could improve on the mei cai and cai buay too!.. a note of thanks to the staff too! could see they were doing there best to attend to every table!
Woah!
In a sense, luckily I decided to postpone the visit this evening.
Opted for Seng Kee which was fabulous.
Will come again really soon with family =)
Our original party of 5 who went there a few months ago, decided to have dinner tonight. Was surprised by the fully booked situation but not their fault as I did not make reservation. Joe was apologetic and under pressure to turn tables around. Good to know people are responding to the blog to try the muay themselves. Will certainly come back again, this time I will book.
just wanted to drop a few comments on my dinner tonight
i popped by the place having not made a reservation thinking it'd not be packed since it's weekend and located at mohd sultan so it's not crowded. reached the place at 720pm only to be told the place was packed till 830pm. i observe some tables empty but i respect the boss's decision since everywhere else would be crowded on mother's day. anyhow, my mom 'hassled' the staff and the boss himself conceded in mock defeat. it's one of the lighter moments since i realise both husband n wife are very affable actually, as with some of the staff.
now on to the food. here's some of my genuine comments:
porridge: very teochew, the 'arm' or water base of the porridge was very 'cheng', done very well and the rice grains were done perfect. the only grouse is refills are a hassle since the bowl is slightly too small. probably they can have individual pots for each table to serve if the buffet is set to function in the long run. it saves on manpower too but maybe it'll compromise on the quality of porridge
pork intestines: not exactly a fan but mom liked that it's not smelly. many kway chap stalls fail in this aspect so thumbs up that their version is not.
duck: very nicely done, flesh was tender, gravy was flavourful. this i like
chilled squid: normal. can't go really wrong but the plum dip according to my mom was of quite a good grade.
mei cai kou rou: done perfectly. flavourful with the right tanginess n savoury. some versions are sweet but i prefer this
deep fried fish (like ikan bilis): crisp, sweet, fragrant. very addictive
bah kut teh: i think it was slightly over-peppery. only slightly. induction stove wasn't working well tonight so the soup wasn't piping hot. otherwise, this soup would have given rangoon road bkt a run for its buck. spare rib was succulent n juicy. overall, i like it very much but since i had 3 bowls of porridge, i haven't got the space left for 2nd helpings
ieat omelette: my bro liked it. sauce was quite unique so do try it.
caixin with pork: didn't quite fancy this
lime with plum: good, must try!
summary: this place has the promise of an authentic teochew porridge place with a local feel and air-conditioned. i didn't quite like that there wasn't a menu for the buffet. for instance i overheard orders for salted egg and or the beancurd with pork floss but i didn't see it on display and there wasn't a menu. i hope they will add teochew fishcake as i feel it'd give the place more identity as a teochew porridge place.
note: the pomfret looks good although we didn't order
I've tried most dishes they serve, and they are good so I've no doubt a meal there is good value/ quality for money. But hearing what the readers share about SCS Butter, Happymummi and staffs' service and attitude just warms my heart. Keep it up guys! : )
This guy is good leh! The Teochew Muay is good. The food is good. The drinks are good. The place is good.
ieat!!, I love the ieat omelette. Amazing, simple yet somehow magical. I also love the tofu equally much. SCS Butter totally did the right thing by heating it! Warm tofu for the win! I think tonight can sleep dreaming of this two already.
Good good, this one got motivation to write about. Thank everybody who posted on top to make me go!
PS: ieat, now it sounds like your "iron out" means WhIpPiNg! LOL. ieatishootipost ratings lenient, but standards are high! Not many people say nice, I will end up liking de.
But that's good for Teochew Muay. =) Many reserved tables when I went.
Glad you liked it Jyoan! Yeah, it is hard to write a review for a friend. Have to be stricter with my ratings or else people might think I am not being objective.
But I am very relieved that most people have written good reviews of the place. Very relieved indeed!
But I am not letting SCS Butter rest on his bums. He still needs to get a few more tok kong items on the menu like the tofu with minced meat and black beans. I will keep bugging him.
I hope the standard will maintain and improve too! =) It's a good location, with good interior, nice people. Mustn't let it go to waste.
Now I know where to bring my porridge friends.
Is there te kwa there? Have no idea if Teochew eat pig liver with porridge...
This Teochew Muay is seriously better than Abalone porridge at Crystal Jade! And best of my life, together with Chai Chee. haha, but considering I only eat porridge less than 3 times a year. LOL! This one can eat alone, no need abalone. And no pork oil, very healthy. (I should learn not to hate porridge like ieat learns not to hate fish.)
I just patronized them for the lunch buffet a few days back too. I have to say the service was great! It's really nice that I now have a place to have Teochew Porridge without worrying about the heat. Best of all, it's really value for money.
I only went with one other person, so didn't really sample too much of a variety. Definitely have to go back again with more people!
As for the food, some of the dishes were a little lack luster. One of the more disappointing ones for me have got to be the braised pig intestines. I found them to be a little bland.
Also, I was kind of disappointed with the fishcake. Unlike the typical soft and "Q" fishcakes I've had at other places, their fishcakes were particularly chewy.
This is just my honest opinion. However, the rest of the food is really great! Very tasty and done well too. Especially the omelette, it was super super delicious!
PS** Having a menu will be fantastic.
I will definitely visit them again with more friends!
Dear Derrick.
Yes, the return of parking lots is such a blessing. We look forward to serving you and your family at 潮州妹.
Dear Anonymous and wife ;)
Thank you for and patronage and we had a good time serving both of you on the 9th of May.
We look forward to serving you and your wife again soon.
Dear liverpool1965,
Thanks for your patronage and we were thankful that we managed to role a few part timers.
We are very grateful for your patience and understanding. ;)
Dear TK,
My apologies for turning your mum down initially. I hope she had an enjoyable Mothers’ day dinner. We really appreciate your understanding.
Our priorities at 潮州妹 are service and quality food. Hence, we had to disappoint some people at the door when our service level was dropping due to the crowd.
We did toy with the idea of having individual pot of muay for each table or a self-service corner for customer to refill it themselves. In the end, we have to drop the idea because the muay will only be warm if it is in individual pot and the self service corner was deem as dangerous especially with kids running around.
Our dishes changed every 3 – 4 days, depending on what’s fresh and available in the market as well. As for our menu, we will try to work something out soon.
Psst… SCS Butter does the marketing ;)
We hope to iron out these minor logistical issues soon and perhaps, on your next visit, you will be able to see the improvement. Hope to serve you soon!
Today marks a disastrous outing for me and my colleagues returning to TCM after 2 weeks.
Food is still good but service was quite atrocious. Making things worse, a lot of what we ordered didn't come and compunding that fact is running out of food!
Saving grace was the dessert of red bean soup, delicious I must say.
SCS Butter was gracious in apologising for the frequent wait for our dishes, although I am sure it might not be enough to persuade most of my colleagues to return.
I've eaten at many Teochew Muay places, but never one as comfortable as this one. The price is very reasonable for such a place. The food, I would rate it a 8 out of 10. However if there are a few must eat items. They are the brinjal, braised duck and bittergourd. Service is good, as expected of an establishment of this stature.
Dear Tuck Wah,
We apologise for the service level you experience today. Despite turning down 10 walk ins doesnt help much at all.
Today was quite a unique situation whereby we had 80 customers walking in between 12pm - 1230pm. As the sudden influx was unexpected, food replenishment was tad slow.
I am glad you did liked the food. We are working towards getting more staff and our work flow act together.
I hope to serve you again if you would give us another shot.
We went today with a party of 8+1baby for lunch today. Joe was nice to arrange a baby chair for us and kids do get the attention!
The food was very authentic and very good. Duck and the 3 layer pork were excellent. Enjoyed all the dishes ordered and the dessert for tao suan was a nice way to wrap up the meal.
Areas for improvement? When it is crowded as commented by others, things can get a bit chaotic. So items ordered may take a while to arrive. So when we asked again, we eventually ended up with 2 orders of the dish. While it worked out fine for us, for some this may not go down well. Perhaps a order slip or something can help.
For drinks, we had chinese tea which my dad commented was very good and we all agree. The sour plum drink was a bit too sweet for us.
Overall, excellent food and good value as promised and air-con comfort to enjoy.
Look forward to introducing more friends over lunch in weeks to come.
john
Regular feature of "See Harm", Fish Cake, “Hae Bee Hiam”, "Ba Chor", good air-conditioning and prompt serving will be enough to "WOW" me and replaces Havelock Teochew Porridge as my favourite Teochew Porridge joint :)
My partner and I was there over the weekend for lunch buffet, and true to what Leslie said, Joe and Tracy were really hospitable. Excellent service I would say.
Although they might not have 101 different dishes, they do make it up with the quality. It is pretty impressive for $9.90 buffet.
I loved their braised duck (a must have) and pig intestine (nicely clean, no funky taste). The mince meat and pickled radish is a simple dish but I like the subtle sweetness of the combination, goes very well with our porridge.
The only dish I think that needs improvement would be the chicken with la chang. I thought the chicken pieces were dry and lack of certain taste I cannot put my finger to. Or it could be just me.
We would certainly want to try out their dinner porridge buffet soon.
This restaurant is great! I cant recommend it and its owner highly enough. he made dinner tryly enjoyable. The glutinous rice stuffed in intestine really good but all good.Even red bean soup for dessert good - I had two bowls and I am angmoh!
Last Thursday 4 of us had a wonderful lunch at "Teochew Muay". The braised duck, the large intestines and the salted egg & tahu are enough for us to come back. The other dishes are not too bad.
We decided to hold our next lunch on 2nd July for our usual makan kakis usually 15 of us.
I hope Joe can organise his staff well, they tend to forget what you order.
Just had dinner buffet at TCM this evening with the bf and I must say it is one of the most pleasant dining experience I've had for a long time. The reasons being..
1. Value for money - generous portions of food that are delicious overall. The tekwa has a melt-in-yr-mouth consistency that makes it a must try. The braised duck & large intestines are very savoury too. The fact that we can have a free flow of duck, large intestines and BKT in a $13.90++ buffet really highlights the dinner's value.
2.Comfy environment - Dining tables are well spaced out, unlike some restaurants where you can literally elbow your neighbours. However, the restaurant gets a tad noisy as the night progresses. Perhaps lowering the stereo's volume will help.
3. Joe the owner - Very hospitable and friendly, making us feel at home to dine there. Kudos to him for making the effort to ensure that his guests are well taken care of, even with as simple a gesture as refilling our teapot without us having to ask.
In terms of improvement, I'd second smart's opinion that the staff has to be more organized. We were given 2 buffet dishes that we didn't order. Nonetheless, we really enjoyed ourselves at TCM and yes, we'd definitely go back for more :)
I took different groups of people there to eat a month back...the food, the service and the ambience were great, particularly the porridge, the chai po, the duck were memorable. We didn't get eat the BKT the last time but we are going there again soon for dinner! We could only wish if there is fish cake to complete the TCM course :)
Congratulations to SCS Butter's Teochew Muay for making into Standard Chartered Top 10 restaurants list for braised duck.
For the next 5 weeks, there will be a 15% discount for ala cart orders above $50 with any standard chartered cards.
Ate dinner at Teochew Muay recently, and was surprised at the rather small selection - definitely smaller that your usual teochew muay outlet. About 20 dishes?
Its alright if those 20 dishes are well-made, I guess.
First thing that hit me - no sweet potato porridge ;-(
The braised large intestines & duck was good. The braising sauce is a little weak but makes up for it with the duck being really tender and intestines well-simmered.
They served a cockle dish that was not up to par, the sauce in which it was fried in is very bland. With such a dish, you really need a strong sauce to lift it.
There wasn't any sotong, which in my opinion, is one of the stalwarts of a teochew muay selection.
There's this mince pork dish with cai po, good stuff, especially with rice.
The Bak Kut Teh was slightly different, a bit herbal but got the job done. Quite a bit of MSG in there though.
Overall, I felt that the place didn't put in enough effort. Belongs to one of those food places that has got a couple of good dishes and just hope to get by with rest. Dishes like the cockles could have been rectified easily.
While its decent value at 13.80per pax, for $90 (our table fo 5) - you can eat quite a bit at a regular teochew muay store too.
Came across the reviews and happened to have a craving for teochew muay, I decided to give 'Teochew Muay' a try.
It was a nice place just a tad too warm. I'm not sure whether the air-conditioning was faulty, as there were fans at the front and back of the restaurant. The boss and his wife (i'm guessing) were really affable people, had the opportunity to make some small talk with the them and the service had a personal touch to it.
The food in general, I have to be honest (in my personal opinion and as a form of constructive criticism) were nothing to shout about. The few areas where I feel have room for improvements:-
The Porriage (Muay) - It was hot enough but was too think for my personal preference (I prefer the more watery kind).
Fishcake and Chai Po Egg - Perhaps they have been left in the open for too long, the fishcake was kind of dry (lack the moisture in it) and the chai po egg was hard (happens when you leave egg in the open for too long) and had too little chai po in it.
Bak Ku Teh - The herbal kind, could taste it in the meat even. Nothing spectacular but passable for buffet standard.
Mei Cai Kou Rou - I'll give the staff the benefit of the doubt that it was a random scoop, as my dish came with only one cube of 'kou rou'.
Braised duck and intestines - Nothing much to comment, was passable.
Bean curd with pork floss - This was perhaps the best dish of all. The bean curd was soft and warm and the pork floss soak in the gravy was delicious.
Overall, I found the dishes to be a tad too bland - I prefer my food with a stronger taste. For $13.80/pax, it wasn't expensive but may be lacking a little in its quality. I probably would get less variety but better quality elsewhere with the same amount spent. Having said that, I am incline give 'Teochew Muay' some time to improve on its dishes before patronizing it again.
Maybe what makes this "Teochew Muay" successful is the passion that the owner have shown for his work and customers. In doing something, once you put your best effort and filled it with love, it will always have a good result.
You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog.
Hungrygowhere shows TCM is closed.
So is it really closed for good?
Yes, it is closed for good.
I missed the last post mentioning its closed for good. Went there last week and realized its no longer there :(
So sorry you wasted your time. The notice that the stall is closed is right at the top of the post.
Awesome place, a couple of visits previously and to realized its gone for good.
Sad to know that, but do share if they decide to re-open!
me and my parents really miss this place, especially e bak kut teh... :(
Joe would be so touched!
why is it closed? :( are they relocated anywhere else? :(
Closed because Joe and Tracey found the restaurant too business not conducive for family life!
