Seng Kee Bak Chor Mee makes Crab Bee Hoon

Crab Bee Hoon $28 per plate
The Ah Chek at Seng Kee Bak Chor Mee has been busy experimenting with Cze Char dishes ever since Seng Kee Bak Chor Mee decided to open for the evenings. In many ways, he is doing what our friend Jason at Ya Kwang was doing before he migrated to Perth. For those who have been reading since the Ya Kwang days, you would know how our kakis went to Ya Kwang almost every week to try out his new dishes. These two men are simply passionate about cooking and are sticklers about the quality of the dishes that they serve.
News of Seng Kee's Crab Bee Hoon came by way of a very excited SMS from Holydrummer who claimed that Seng Kee's Crab Bee Hoon was the best he had ever eaten. For those of you who know Holydrummer, you would know that the guy has eaten a lot of Crab Bee Hoon. So for him to declare this to be the best means something.
It did not take me long to make my way down to Seng Kee. It is one of my family's regular haunts. The kids love the Nam Joo Fried Pork Strips there and the Fish Maw Soup is one of the most "tok-kong" around.
I watched the way the Ah Chek made his Crab Bee Hoon and it is hard to imagine how it could not be good. The bee hoon was fried first over a hot wok to give it a smokey wok hei flavour. Then the crabs were fried in ginger, shallots and given a splash of a special crab stock which by itself was already very sweet. The resulting Crab Bee Hoon was something to be savoured. Best of all he charges per plate. So each plate of Crab Bee Hoon costs $28 and comes with a medium sized Sri Lankan Crab. 4.5/5
Conclusion
If you enjoy Crab Bee Hoon, this is certainly another place to put on your list. Currently, he still does not stock so many crabs so if you plan to go, do ring up first during the day so that he can make sure there are fresh crabs waiting for you!

Mmm this I will definitely try to go ASAP! Can you believe it, I have never tried dry carb bee hoon before. Only ever had the soupy one.
breadcrumbs, the dried version is awesome.
Seng Kee has a very extensive cze char list of dishes. Hearing holydrummer and Leslie rave about their crab bee hoon has gotten me really interested to try it. : )
haven't tried Seng Kee's BCM too!..time to head down on Sunday!
Please make sure you ring up to reserve your crabs beforehand.
I chanced upon this on Saturday afternoon of the Chap Gor Meh weekend (15th day of Lunar New Year) and Seng Kee was actually closed because they were preparing for a private dinner. So the usual BCM was no longer available, but boy am I so glad I was nudged by Towkay himself to try out their only dish available then, otherwise it would have never appeared on the blog!
I lost count, but in the course of my sinful indulging, so many customers walked in craving for BCM, like me, but came away disappointed that afternoon upon hearing that only crab bee hoon was available. Me, too! But, if only they were a bit more game enough to try something different then... They would not have regretted it.
The highlight was definitely the BEE HOON. The taste was brimming with superior stock, shallots, ginger & spring onions. The sweetness of the crab stood out after being immersed into the thick bee hoon. It was a very reminiscent taste.
Immediately, comparisons were drawn. And I'm very glad to report that my expectations were far exceeded than what I had initially set for Seng Kee.
Allow me to moderate some expectations - Lest our makankakis' standards shoots way up high above the sky, only to come crashing down on my head...
For the record, I claimed Seng Kee's Crab Bee Hoon can definitely fight with Danny's of Sin Huat fame - which effectively translates to mean - Seng Kee's version is, to me, on par and on equal terms with the latter which I do consider my golden benchmark.
Well yes, it's really the best crab bee hoon I've had since Sin Huat.
In terms of value for $$$, it's definitely worth it. Good to share with up to 3 or 4 people.
And Leslie's right, please call in advance to reserve the crabs beforehand. The dish is not a regular item on the menu although it is gradually being phased in as so.
Pair it with the Fish Maw soup and you're in heaven!
When I left Seng Kee while watching Towkay and his staff prepare for their private dinner, I peered into their pen cai preparations and I was absolutely awed by the freshness & quality of ingredients he used. Dunno-how-many-head-abalone, top grade big plump juicy scallops, jumbo prawns, etc... 'nuff said.
Go on and explore! Towkay Lee has a lot of hidden dishes up his sleeves so do check out his 'other' menu!
Hahah! I couldn't wait for next Fri's session there with the kakis. I called up this morning and went to have the crab bee hoon for lunch. It was really delicious. At $28 per crab, its a very good deal. We had 2 crabs for 5 of us. Told them to add enough bee hoon to fill 5 and they happily obliged. Nice... and thks holydrummer for sounding us out. : )
I saw another table ordered it as well. Mrs. Lee told me that there has been several orders since the post came out. : )
i went to try sin huat's a month or 2 back. have to say that the standard seems to have dropped. not as delicious or oomph as it used to be. maybe i m jaded, maybe danny was having an offday...
seng kee's sounds good. have to go check it out. my sister is a regular for their BCM.. almost every sunday she is there..
Chris - That's sad to hear... Maybe you're right, Danny had an off day.
Sigh I just called Towkay Lee hoping today wasn't alternate Monday, but it was. So they're closed.
But he excitedly told me over the phone that since the post, his Crab Bee Hoon has been selling very well and his customers have commented that it was very good. He also told me they're impressed with his cze char dishes too! He must be beaming with pride there, spoken like a true teochew ah hia indeed! =D
Glad to hear that his new dishes are going down well with customers.
I checked it out just now after I read this post!! Really good.. Ming Kee gotta stand aside! HAha oh e owner also shared what he is cooking for ieat this friday's dinner! Slurps! :P
Ah glad you like it!
