Xi Le Teng Dessert Stall: 70 year old lady, 70 cents dessert

Red Bean Soup - 70 cents
Red Bean Soup always reminds me of my kindergarten days at the PAP. It's nostalgic in a sort of a bad way 'cos I always remember it is the worst red bean soup in the world. Rather than having whole beans or even half beans, it's just the shell of the red beans in a big bowl of rather translucent sweet water that has a tinge of red in it.
Red Bean Soup must be one of the simplest desserts in the world to prepare which probably explains why the Aunty at the PAP prepares it every week. Plus it's cheap. There are really only three ingredients that you need and they are Red Beans, water and sugar. But of course you could make it a little more special by flavouring it with pandan leaves or dried orange peel. The more sophisticated would add sago and dried longans in it. But for the PAP kindergarten, water, sugar and Red Beans are all the ingredients they used. (In descending order of quantity)

White Oats
But when you talk about the essential Red Bean Soup, there really are only two types. There is the type where you simply boil the beans in water to get a grainy soup with broken beans, ie the ones that mom used to make. Then there are the ones that have nice tender whole beans in a red cloudy soup, ie those that you buy at the hawker centre. Both are nice, but I think that the latter, ie the whole beans type take a little more skill to prepare. This is the classic Red Bean Soup sold at old dessert stalls such as this one which has fed our friend SCS Butter since the days before he was even churned into cream.
The little old lady at the stall has been cooking the same old Red Bean Soup for 40 years. When she first started, she was probably a head taller and wearing horn-rimmed spectacles and a beehive hairdo. She is so old school that she is still one of the few ladies around who still like to wear sleeveless grandma clothes. Hey, you might say "But she is a grandma what!" but you know, she is old fashioned by today's grandma standards. My mom and mom-in-law are both grandmas and they certainly won't wear sleeveless granny clothes.

Anyway, I think I am getting too carried away.

Yes, one of the very few left that still exuberate the ku-zao-wei. Chng Teng best & add ingredient still cost 90 cts only.
How many stalls that sell Chng teng still have persimmon & kuek-chieh.
When everyone is rushing to the Beehive, this is still the dessert stall to go for.
BTW, I think the husband is the one that started it but the wife took over years ago to allow the husband to 'retire'.
Also, try the SumLor HorFan at the Cze Char stall ( not the one near the toilet), good 'Wohei'.
Looks very traditional and good!! Old school is always good. Shall try to visit dis stall in the near future if im in e vicinity.
Thr used to b a similar style desert place at Albert Food Centre selling Tao suan, pulau hitam n green bean with sago. Always a snaking long queue whilst e stall is open. Ever since the centre closed for renovation and shifted to the temporary site, think the old man and lady is taking a break. Perhaps even retired!
Hey Kwek, game to try the Sum Lor Hor Fan but which Cze Char stall? When I am there, I go to the one next to toilet. Noticed one next to the porridge stall, is that the one?
This is my favorite traditional dessert stall since the 60s. The cheng teng ingredients are traditional, no messing around with jelly and things like that. She has maintained the consistency in the dessert she serves. Never fails to delight my friends and family when I taupau for them during gatherings.
Time check: 14:16
Time for dessert!!!
Even the bowl looks so old fashioned. Don't see this kind of bowl nowadays :-)
In the past one month, I went there at least twice at around 7pm. Each time only found that the white oats was sold out and there were not much left for the other items. That shows how popular the stall is.
Dun go there lah, dun crowd this place, aunty very busy for her age liao. This is one of my fav hangout with my girlfrens where we can chat quietly at night. Now its gonna be crowded.
Brings us back in time! My sweet tooth is yearning for some!! Though the Germans make good cakes (which is why I've put on weight) but I miss our Singaporean desserts. :)
Hi ieat.
Are you serious about the red bean soup being made with just the redbean skin?
where did the rest of the read bean go ? thats bad man...
What I meant was that they use so little red beans and boiled them so long that only the skin is left and all the rest of the bean is dissolved in the very dilute soup!
yes.. this is a hidden gem
To Zhouzi : Cze Char stall with the Sum Lor Hor Fan 02-74 Far Kee
BeeHive used to be pretty good for cold dessert but after the upgrading, the children took over and quality dipped. Recently rescued by TV show "Bustling Cashier"but I am concern whether the quality can be maintained and the items are X.
Ooo! I've eaten at this stall before since my ah gong's house is nearby and my Dad always brought us here before went for CNY reunion dinner.
can i have the exact address, cant find commonwealth crescent food centre in street directory.
Hi Kwek, thanks for the reply. Stall no. noted, will try when I go there.
Ronnie, here is the link http://www.streetdirectory.net.my/asia_travel/travel/zone/Commonwealth/restaurants/map/
Nearest MRT is EW20, the FC is right to the back of C'wealth Cresent.
hi zhouzi,
thk for the link.
Hi Ronnie and Zhouzi,
The street dirctory link provided appears to be off course. The food centre/makket is in fact surrounded by blocks 116, 117 and 118. These blocks are "encircled" by Commonwealth Link and Commonwealth Crescent. On the streetdictory, just key in either Commonwealth Link or Commonwealth Crescent you should then be able to find the way.
ieat,
eerrr, pls explain 'before I churned into cream'....Dun know what it means but its funny thou
SCS butter
Just started my F&B journey as an apprentice, i felt u didn't give the old lady a justice by writing this
"Nothing really exceptional about them except that there is an old lady selling stuff which hasn't changed for over 40 years. "
The fact that the quality and taste could be maintained consistently is really hard. And to sell at $0.70 a bowl, the auntie is not even earning much!
I basically grew up eating this stall...
Thanks for your comment Wilson.
I thought that we both agree that the lady was exceptional in the sense that she has been serving the same thing for 40 years.
My point is that one should go there to eat something really traditional and comforting rather than something mind blowing.
SCS butter, it is ROFL funny cos it is normally cream waiting to be churned into butter. Remind me of Benjamin Button
Yes I was simply trying to exaggerrate by going one step further back than cream
yeah! I m with wilson on this. I had just started patronising this stall. n it roxx!
I find that the cheng tng tastes even better when you ta pow and chill it in the fridge. itz plain superb!

actually ieat,
i think this aunty desert is mind-blowing. You will not find another stall doing red bean soup that great. Her red beat simply stay as beans, not just the skin left and the sweetness is just nice. I cannot find another stall that do red bean so good liao. my fren say her white oats is the one and only in singapore that is so delicious haha.
BTW i try to peep into her boiling pan, i suspect the red bean is steam 1st and not boil.. am not sure lah, cos i scare she scold me stealing her recipe if i so obvious looking in.
Have you tried the stall over at Maxwell ClearTear?
Yes I think her red beans are very good. But Bee Gardens also does theirs the same way for their ice kachang.
Ieat,
which stall, sell by uncle who also sell Dou Suan? Yes its quite good but different from this aunty. Uncle one the water not clear like aunty, but still taste good lah.
Aunty just feel so at home lor, imagine a humble bean with so much depth. ehhe
