Wah Kee Prawn Noodles: The Best of the Best Awards

Wah Kee's Jumbo Prawn Noodles $10

Over the last 4 years, I have blogged a good number of prawn noodles and after reading all the comments from the ieat community, I have to say that the one prawn mee that is consistently getting the highest praises is Wah Kee Prawn Noodle.

So, I am starting a new label called " Best of the Best" which celebrates the best of each of category of Singapore's famous hawker dishes. Some of them, like Wah Kee is quite clear cut and I am sure the majority of the ieaters would concur that they deserve the award. However, others might not be so obvious, in which case we shall call for nominations and subsequently do a poll to find the champion.

Wah Kee's prawn noodles really are a cut over the rest. The Uncle here does not use any pork bones in his soup but insists that he uses only seafood to make his sweet prawn broth. He has one big advantage in that his son-in-law happens sell seafood at Tekka Market and so he always gets first pick of the best prawns. Take the freshest prawns and mixed them with a lot of passion and pride and you get one very special and potent prawn broth which you can confidently bring any overseas friend to eat in order to show off Singapore food! 4.8/5

So if there are no objections, may I present Wah Kee as the Best of the Best Prawn Noodles in Singapore.

You can read my previous post on Wah Kee as well as our kakis' comments here.

Wah Kee definitely deserves the "Best of the Best" award. It is my favourite prawn noodles in Singapore.

I normally order the $8/$10 Big Prawn Bee Hoon Soup as the prawns are served separately in a broth which tastes heavenly (it somewhat tastes better than the broth with the bee hoon). The prawns are big, fresh and succulent!

No arguements with Wah Kee...

Next dish please....

ieat, can i suggest that you offer an additional link at the bottom of each post with the function to email the post to friends. Cheers

iJeff says it all. You have to order the $8/10 portion to really appreciate the broth. It's very distinct from the broth that comes with the noodles. After a long queue, go for the best!

I was there just yesterday. Brought my bro along for the first time. He had orgasmic reactions, to say the least.

Yup I always order only the $10 portion for 3 big sexy prawns whenever I am there. They also give a free packet of tissue because they know the best way to deshell & enjoy the prawns is by hand.

Exactly, after all that driving and queueing, I only want the best.

Uncle Lau still looking at his prime.

Without a doubt, this is the best prawn mee there is. Prove me wrong!

Lyrical Lemongrass said...

I concur. This is, by far, the best prawn noodles ever. The broth is addictive!

HolyDrummer, You mean the best in Spore? Go to Penang and it is fraction of the price you paid.We have very good prawn mee soup for like RM3/-.

best in SG personally

Definitely the best I have ever eaten

smart, we are planning to visit Penang. Pls let us know the places for delicious prawn mee soup.

P. Chong said...

my personal standard too for prawn mee...and even though I usually prefer Penang food, Prawn mee is not one of those dishes...I feel Wah Kee is better than the best in Penang.

cactuskit said...

Ditto for me. The second is more difficult to identify, but the first is without question Wah Kee. : )

Anonymous said...

I disagree with the rest. They're above average, but certainly not the best. The first time I tried it more than a year ago, it was very good. But their standard seems to progressively decline with every subsequent visit - the soup seems to get more dilute and less tasty. Not just my own opinion, but also that of my makan kakis. Perhaps ieat should find a way to try it incognito before making the award.

cactuskit said...

The owners don't recognise all the makan kakis in this blog, so thats considered incognito, isn't it? Its not just Les making this award. He does seek the forum kakis' views before he declares it. Other hawker dishes are tighter in terms of ranking, but most of us feel that Wah Kee has the best prawn noodles.

Your alternative view is respected and accepted though. Thks for sharing. : )

By the way, you have to try the $8 and $10 versions. I agree that the $3 and $5 versions are more watered down, due to the veg and noodles in the same bowl. I believe Les gave the award for the more expensive versions.

Good yes best No. for the price it not the best. And it's inconsistent. For the price I will go with Hoe Nam for the best soup and best tasting prawns not big but best tasting.

don't think I'd want to witness that! :)

soundman, cactuskit, breakfast next week? :)

cactuskit said...

Good choice. I believe Hoe Nam is Leslie's wife's favourite. : )

soundman said...

Hi Anonymous, would you share with us the stall you think is better than Wah Kee? We certainly like to exchange notes, compare and learn from each other.

ieat said...

Anonymous, this award is based on the commments of the ieat community not just mine alone. If there is another prawn mee that gets more mention than Wah Kee, then we shall put up a poll to vote. But so far Wah Kee has garnered the most positive comments in the last few years which is why it is awarded Best of the Best.

If you have a better prawn mee which is consistent then please nominate it and get your friends to nominate it as well. Of course each of them should have an email attached to their name so that we know we are not dealing with phantom commenters.

edfoong said...

i must try this out. but i usually do like to have the dry versions elsewhere as i can taste both the soup and the chilli. test of the stall on 2 fronts.

how is their dry version? my favourite so far is at zion hawker so really looking to check this stall out to see how it contends!

mr prawn mee said...

You eat this one $10 and the rest is are selling at $3 how to compare?

This one most expensive so the best? This one you get bigger prawns so best?

I should say this is slightly a biased comparison.

tweety said...

Agree it's the best I've tried so far in Singapore. The whole combination and presentation of the expensive version blend very well, look simply mouth watering and taste heavenly! Can't wait to try it again when we are back in Singapore.

Not the best for me. The soup is quite artificial....doesn't look like prawn soup for me.....like you say...lobster bisque.

Thanks for putting this up...i love prawn mee and thought most sellers put pork bones to boil the soup...

Anyway will definitely chk this place out.. used to do story-telling at this area and din knw there's such gd prawn mee ard, 差一点走宝了 :)

I would agree with Mr Prawn Mee. In order to earn such high accolade, Wah Kee should be consistent with their quality be it the value meal and the high priced one. I am aware that this stall also has one that is priced at $25. Heard that the taste is out of this world. Never tried it as advance order is required above all I don't live in the rarefied stratosphere.
IMHO, before awarding such a label, ieat & company should evaluate the stall ability to consistently deliver quality food throughout the price range that is on offer and not just the high end range.

cactuskit said...

Well, then to put it in another way, the rest haven't have on offer what they can offer at $8. They simply serve the best prawn mee. Other stalls can't come close to Wah Kee's standard in their more expensive versions even if they have them. And Wah Kee is not the best because they have big prawns. I've always found the food there consistently good. I've eaten there about 8 times in the past year.

Ruky said...

anybody can tell me how to go to this st? i have never heard of this st name before..

Kevin said...

Not the best for me too.

Heard of the term comparison distribution? For any experiment testing, distribution type plays a big part.

Just like you also can't make a sweeping statement say "This car is the best". Best in what? If you want to talk about a Camry, then you have to use Accord as comparison. You cannot say Camry is better than Civic because that is not a fair comparison.

Lets talk about Wah Kee $3 prawn noodle, is it really the best? You cannot use $10 prawn nooodle to compare with $3 one and say best lah.

Also if you want to call it the best in Singapore, then you must at the very least, have eaten at all the stalls in Singapore. From your list, I can see there are still a few stalls that are quite popular but you have not eaten.

So my sentiment, good no doubt but best? That's a very big statement. Maybe you would like to call it best for you.

cactuskit said...

You have a point. Wah Kee is best of the best for Ieat forummers in Singapore.

mr prawn mee said...

If gonna compare with $3.00 -$5.00.the Hoe Nam beats hands down in freshness and taste of the prawns and the mee dry and soup.
Eat the $3.00 -$5.00 version at Wah Kee it's noting compare to even to less known stall.

cactuskit said...

Ok Hoe Nam wins the best $3-$5 noodles. : )

Ricky said...

Yea, I like Hoe Nam $4 noodles :)
Haha, seems like the title of "Best in Singapore" stirs up some ire.

Anonymous said...

Ha ha....best best lah....no best no best lah....WTF....you all too serious man

ieat said...

Like I said, if there is enough contention, we will put it to a vote. But over the last few years, Wah Kee has garnered more accolades than Hoe Nam. As for the rest of the prawn mee which I have not tried yet. Maybe it is because I have tried them and not blogged about them? I don't blog every prawn mee I eat especially if they don't make the grade. So if you think there are other contenders, please let us know which ones should be up there. Again if enough support, we will put to the vote.

Tried Wah Kee $8 version. The soup stock is indeed very flavourful. Just that they put a tad too much garlic in it. And I think I prefer the soup to be boiled with pork (I know, I know... stone me...) because it gives the soup a kind of meaty flavour that I like. And the prawns, although big, are not as tasty as the smaller-sized one.

Overall, good prawn mee. But not die die must eat for me.

Porkie Pie said...

Hoe Nam is my next stop. Is it still at the same location (darn, it is so much closer to my old place at Farrer Park)?

I wish they could do prawn mee like they do in Malaysia. You know, a slice of hard-boiled eggs, and some crispy fried stuff in there...

ieat said...

Joo Chiat Prawn Noodles are also very good for the $3-5 prawn noodles. Yes Hoe Nam is also very good. But Wah Kee seems to stand out from the rest amongst our foodie community.

Anonymous said...

Hi, wonder how the ieat forumers rate Da Dong prawn mee at Rangoon Rd against WK?

mr. prawn mee said...

Da Dong prawn mee about 3 times was tad salty for me and no match to Hoe Nam version.

Holy Drummer said...

Smart:

Penang is obviously in another league, but pchong seems to have spoken =)

I have tried the holy trinity of Wah Kee, Hoe Nam & Joo Chiat @ Onan Road.

The latter two did not really impress me. Esp Joo Chiat's. I had commented on Joo Chiat's soup...

I guess it can stand between Hoe Nam VS Wah Kee. I know there are a few of us who prefers Hoe Nam. But I had an upsetting experience @ Hoe Nam, sad to say. Revisit my earlier comment if you care to.

My personal favourite is still the latter =) Wah Kee retains my vote =)

FOODnTRAVELla said...

WOW! Big, fresh and succulent prawns + noodles for $10 only. Will surely try out when I'm in Singapore.

Anonymous said...

I think Wah Kee $8 is the best in SG. I go there once a week since it was featured on the blog. Even introduced my friends there but sometimes, the soup seems diluted so the consistency isn't exactly there. you need to catch them at a good time but 75% of the time, it's solid

Cactuskit, you are a quick one, like the lallang :{. For me there is no dispute that WK $10 meal is better than others. I myself had tried quite a number of stalls (Jln Sultan, Middle Rd, People, Ah Hui formerly of Long House, Whitley) all well known for their prawn noodles.
As for Hoe Nam, the $3-$5 one is above average like the others but not best. My kakis and I found that we have to perk up the taste of the soup with the chilli powder provided, which should not be the case; the soup should be flavoursome by itself. chaozhouzi

Anonymous said...

me and another 4 colleagues visited the store for lunch today. all of us felt that the soup is too sweet, and the attitude of the store owner is kind of arrogant. nevertheless, the prawn is fresh for the $8 choice.

FYI, Nam Hoe is still at the same location. (Tai Thong Crescent)

We prefer Beach Road Prawn Noodle House located at 370 East Coast Road.

holybro said...

For me, I think it's the best so far I have had,.

Others have their own best prawn mee.

There is no universally best place la. Every person has his own preference.

Well, since Hoe Nam seemed to have popped up many times, I think it is good to go try it out too...compare the 2, see which one is better.

meanwhile...wah kee remains my benchmark. :D

happy eating people!

12 of us descended upon Wah Kee this morning, all 11 became fast fans of Wah Kee after taking the 'starter' portions of $8.00. After the makan, I surveyed my table and one other, confirmed empty bowls of soup. A good indication of how much they like it. All 11 thumbs up, justified that high rating that ieat accorded to Wah Kee. Please note that Pek Kio Food Centre will be closed for the whole of June 2010.
