Eng Kee Chicken Wings: Wings, Wings and more Wings

It just goes to show that you don't really need a lot of variety in order to be popular. All you really need is one item that everybody likes. In the case of Eng Kee, they just happen to chance upon a fried chicken wing recipe that people would line up even at 3pm in the afternoon to eat.

Now, when it comes to Chicken Wings, you can't really go wrong if you use fresh chicken and you eat it piping hot. The best thing about a piping hot fresh chicken wing is when you bite into it, all this chicken juices flow out which is just slightly sticky, carrying with it the flavour of all the seasoning. The contrast of the crispy hot skin with the juicy flesh and a nice chilli sauce is one of the most enjoyable things to eat and you can easily down a few at a go.

Well, Eng Kee's Chicken Wings are exactly like that. The seasoning is not very sophisticated, maybe just soy sauce, msg, salt and pepper. I certainly could not make out any strong spices in it, so aside from it being fresh and piping hot, I could not explain why there should be such a long queue for this except for the fact that they are the only ones which is freshly fried at this time of the day. 4.25/5

Actually, the style of fried chicken wings that I really enjoy are the ones that are served with Malay style Nasi Lemak. Again, it is not overly seasoned, but I really do enjoy the tumeric in the seasoning. Eaten with their sweet sambal tumis, its one of the reasons I head all the way to Changi Village food centre for.

Another style of fried chicken wings I really enjoy are Har Cheong Gai (Prawn Paste Chicken). Unfortunately, these are only found at Cze Char places like the one I blogged about recently at Siang Hee. The best Har Cheong Gai uses only the mid-wings of the chicken and the flavour is fantastic, especially when the juices come oozing out when you bite into it. I sometimes wish that someone would just set up a stall to sell Har Cheong Chicken Wings. That would be nice wouldn't it?

Conclusion

This stall simply sells bee hoon with fried chicken wings which goes to show that you just have to have one popular item in order to "make it". Sometimes it pays to be the master of one, rather than to be a jack of all trades.

They sell tons wings a day. Only the boss know the special recipe. My colleague's mom worked there frying wings for over a decade. Retired recently. Boss is a very generous man to his staffs. : )

Noticed you requested for the wings not to be chopped. Good idea.

nice fried chicken wings.

Cactus, why is it better not to have it chopped?

cactuskit said...

Personal preference lah. First, I like to tear the wings apart with my own hands. The twisting of the joints and biting it apart add to the whole experience of eating chicken wings. Secondly, the juice stays in the wings until I makan them. I usually order 3-4 for myself. ; )

Ahh, who don't love chicken wings?
Gosh...
I'm putting on weight.
No more fried stuff for me at the moment..

This stall was started sometime in 93/94 selling essentially the same stuff past 15 years. Chicken Wing was 70ct initially and 'inflated' to the current $1.20.

I like the fried noodles and bee hoon combi, plus veg and chicken wing, a totally satisfying meal for less than $3. His chilli is good too..sweet/hot type.Intro my wife to it many years back when we were dating, she loves the food!

The boss is a very nice person.Rem once I went down to buy dinner in my schooling days, was digging for notes in my pocket, he thought I did not bring money and asked me to pay next time when I come.Impressed. He has no airs even now with his roaring business.

The stall does not have a name for more than a decade..think he added the name eng kee in the past few years.

Not bad, but not so 'wowing' yet... still lack the 'ommph' factor.

Other than being freshly fried, never thought much of the wings. Pop by Telok Blangah hawker center for the boneless wings lah. Good wings and nice chilli to go with it. Not to mention one of the best pak cham kai around!

I ate an average of 4 chicken wings each time I visited. : ). Chicken wing is a childhood food we all grow up with. I remember eating almost one every day at the tuckshop when I was in primary school.

ieat said...

Its $1.20 each.

ieat said...

Boneless chicken wings sound very interesting. Please provide more details bugger.

Pong said...

Wow, 4 wings, that is what I can't afford now.
Without training, I'm gaining weight.

$1.20 is average price for chicken wings.

Eng Kee should have KFC-like boxes to tarpau home. Wudnt it be nice to finger lick until you shiok at home and then wash your hands clean.

cactuskit said...

Yes that would be a good idea jencooks. Maybe for those with 5 wings and above.

i love chicken wings too, but i always like it when they use scissors to cut it up, easier to eat with the bee hoon la.

early morning bee hoon with sunny side up egg, chicken wing, some cabbage and some chilli ! shiok !

wah, i must go there during lunch liao

ieat said...

Ah talking about Campbells soup. My first chicken pie was made with campbell soup!

ieat said...

Saw my own pictures and needed to go eat the chicken wings today!

Actually the chilli that goes with the wings is shiok too! Sweet and not overly spicy.

Had the bee hoon and noodles today. OK lah. Still thinking of Siang Hee's Har Cheong Gai

Ban Leong Wah Hoe at Casuarina Road also sells fantastic Prawn Paste Chicken =)
other stuff there is great too. chilli crab/black pepper crab/sweet n sour pork/ basically everything they sell there's great.

It's always crowded especially on weekend nights, people will queue for seats.

Just a suggestion!

cactuskit said...

If you guys want bee kia opposite thomson med centre for lunch, give me a tinker. They serve a mean har cheong kai too.

ieat said...

Yes I have heard about Ban Leong Hua! Perhaps our makan ring leaders Cactuskit, Taukwa and Champagne can start thinking about a session?

Anonymous said...

If only they can create a separate queue for packing the wings, I am sure business can pick up a little more.

Sometimes the queue can be quite long and I am not ready to wait to just get the wings.

Derrick said...

makan ring leaders, i am game for both bee kia and ban leong

bee kia har cheong kai and beef hor fun, i didnt know they open for lunch, i tot it was always a dinner thingie

ban leong, long time not been, i know their hor fun is so so but i hear they serve good seafood too.

hmm, maybe a makan session at ban leong ?

Anonymous said...

Will be good if they really can have a standard packing box that can hold 5 to 6 wings without cutting.

And separate queue to buy wings alone is a nice idea.

cactuskit said...

Les, you know the boss already right? Can suggest the box idea...

ieat said...

No actually I don't.

try to go Ban Leong Wah Hoe on weekdays. Quality tend to deteriorate (esp the cheaper items like Hor Fun, fried rice) on crowded weekends.

Their chilli/pepper sri lanka crab is good. Agree on the beef hor fun too (both dry/wet). They also sell sum lo hor fun if you request. Fried rice is pretty decent too, on weekdays.
For two pax, we usally order a crab, 6 pieces of wings, kangkong and a bowl of sharkfin soup (the soup cost $20 and can serve 3-4 pax).

This is the only place I think off when I want to munch on something not too filling. Usually I buy 5 wing to share with my hubby. Simply delicious. Must dip into their chilli sauce. I find their fried bee hoon so-so only. Can do without it.

ieat said...

Yes I agree. I think the chilli sauce plays a big part in the overall chicken wing experience! Bee Hoon and mee only to add on calories.

I've got a yummy bbq chicken wings to recommend...its at a stall (selling wanton noodes, chicken wings & satay) at Bukit Merah View Market! Frm the taste, the bbq chicken wing seems to be honey coated & the chilli goes really well with it. I feel its better than the Serangoon Gardens . The wanton noodles is also nice. =)

ieat said...

That is interesting! Kobbes, you should join the forum and continue to share with us your recommendation!

Yes! the wings are very nice. I have been eating since primary sch, 21yrs old now. the stall used to be at the carpark.but relocated to the present place now. their fishcake and steam otah is as good. I always order them together.

After you have finished yr wings remember to go to the food centre behind.

Level 2 stall no. 70, there is this old lady selling red bean soup, cheng tng. Very nice and cheap.

cactuskit said...

Is that stall Chris' stall Les?

ieat said...

No. This stall sells only four items and they are pretty good!

cactuskit said...

Must make a trip there then! : )

Ally said...

wow you only just tried this! i've been loving this for years heheh....i didn't actually know the name of this shop, i call it "Banner Brand Chicken Wings" because there are banners with pictures of chicken wings everywhere!

cactuskit said...

I only tried it for the 1st time in May last year. We living in the East seldom venture to the area. But good discovery, and by chance too : )

Hi kobbes,

Upon your recommendation, I went searching for the BBQ wings at Bt Merah View. I think I found it! RJD stall #01-287? Ordered 2 wings at $1 each. One look at them when it was served, I know I was on to something good. One bite and I was hooked. Thanks kobbes.

BTW ieat, the Golden Horse BBQ wings that you blogged is no more. They are now selling braised ducks rice and noodle. Yet to try.

Thanks for the update! That is such a shame

I tried it and personally think its just normal, nothin special about it. So kinda disappointed

=( You only have so few chicken wings post. Try the one at Boon Lay (I don't know the name, but they sell Nasi Lemak at midnight). The Nasi Lemak is famous amongst every NTU student. But in my opinion, it's only so-so. Lousy rice. But the chili and wings are delicious.

And since your clinic is nearby, might want to try the one at Tampines Mart no-air-con Kopitiam. BOTH the BBQ and normal wings are yummy! The BBQ chicken wing rice is very good because even the chicken rice and chili are tasty. I can't find fault with this one. They always serve hot and crispy skin as well. Plus there is service, they will bring you the cutlery and chili... Forever have to queue. My bf love the medium rare beef from this stall as well.
Can eat this many days in a row. =)

Oh, btw, the best BBQ chicken wings I've ever eaten in my entire life, to date, is 4Fingers (Ion Food Hall B4). That's is maddening good! It's Korean style, which is a new style of chicken wing. Supposedly, you air up the chicken, then somehow there is gap between the skin and the meat blah blah blah. Different thing from Chinese wings altogether.

Second best is TCC's Spicy Wings. This is super spicy and extremely Singaporean. All the chili and sweetness.

Both of them are not pure wings. (This is one of the moments when I will exclaim that some things really is $$$ = better.)

Can't really find good un-flavoured fried chicken wings in Singapore. Only in Malaysia (kampong chicken), very, very different.=)

ieat said...

Boon Lay Nasi Lemak is on my to do list. I have also heard about the Korean style wings. It should appear one day! Thanks for the headsup!

hindhede said...

I went out of my way this evening to give their wings a try. Unfortunately, it was a major disappointment. Can't see what's so great about their wings. At best, they're average. I had a plate of noodles to accompany the wings, and the noodles were another disappointment.

zhouzi said...

Erh, Jyoan, ever wonder how they air up the wings? I once watched a CNA program called kungfu kitchen where the trainee was taught to blow up the duck with their mouth to separate the skin from the meat. The result was a succulent peking duck. *hee hee hee*

zhouzi, oh I see. It sounds a little bit cruel on the workers.

But come to think of it, yes, Peking Ducks have rather separated skins. I love the duck skin. Eat it with sugar, mmmm, yummy. =)
