A5 Kagoshima Wagyu Tasting Session at Astons Prime
Photos and slideshow by Cactuskit - thanks bro!
Many thanks to everyone who turned up for the A5 Wagyu session! This time round we had a 100% turnout which is excellent!
I think it is fair to say that everyone felt that the beef was great value. However, those who were not accustomed to eating such a well marbled piece of meat did comment that it was a little too much. Some beefeaters on the other hand felt that 200g was too small and wanted a 400g steak instead! Many said that the beef was a slice of heaven, but a few said that they had expected it to be more heavenly. I could give you a whole list of comments but I think I should leave it and let our tasters tell you all about their experience!
For those who missed out on the session, I have spoken to Aston and he is quite happy to extend a special ieatishootipost price of $118.80 for the same A5 Wagyu 200g steak. All you have to do is to print out this post and present it to the waiter before ordering. You will need to print out one post for every steak that you want to order. (Centrepoint management requires this)
We are in the midst of planning our Steak Appreciation workshop where we are going to invite a butcher to teach us about the different parts of the cattle accompanied by a tasting session. If you would like to come for that session, make sure that you are in our facebook group. That way, I can send you an invite once registrations open.
Remember to eat in moderation and if you have a cholesterol problem, please check with your doctor before eating this kind of food. (Sometimes doctor say also no point. My patient turned up today despite me telling him to control his diet!)

Congrats Leslie! For such a great turn-out. Thks for sharing such good food & colourful pix!
Kanos, there's another place in Tokyo you may wanna try - Hama Steak House @ Ginza (the restaurant often entertains celebrities & diplomats).
Recently, I'd a top-notch Chef Course @ ¥18,900 or US$200 per person, which includes teppanyaki Foie Gras, Seafood, Abalone, Steak (finest Japanese black cattle beef (A-5). You may read the details @ http://luxuryhaven.blogspot.com/2009/04/travel-fine-dining-ginza-tokyo.html
Mate, will be in S'pore in a fortnight and want to say a big Thank You!
Will be working thru your recommendations!
Just thinking out loud,
Botak_Mamasan, are you gonna change your nick after your hair grow out?
The beef really look tempting man!
Dear Pong, thks 4 showg so much interest in my hair as e beef..haha... papasan & mamasan will b keepg tis hairless hairstyle 4 next 12 mths.. so i will ans u in 12 mths times...heehee
Btw i find it so hard to describe to papasan the texture of the beef as it is so unique thus he will be there to try it himself !
Welcome. It was great fun snapping away. Loved the steak but next time we try, it'll be cactuskitty's turn. I'll go for my ribeye. : )
Hey Cactus call us along as papasan oso hvnt try ;)
Sure thats provided cactuskitty wants to have it. Very ex. I'll try to convince her. : )
Wah Botak_Mamasan, 12 months! Kudos!
all this talk about the wagyu
i must say that the sides served with the steak really do the meat justice. they are all freshly prepared and seasoned perfectly
for all you steak lovers out there, did u know a glass of shiraz or cabernet sauvignon will go down beautifully with the meat as the acidity of the wine and the integrated tannins will complement the fat in the meat each time u chomp down !
i had a look at the winelist served at aston and i can say most would do an excellent job paired with steak !
The Brussel Sprouts were excellent and so were the onion rings you recommended, Derrick. : )
Derrick your bottle of shiraz come in perfect timing....i guess that is wat make this tasting so heavenly for me :)
Maybe we can have it like the way we have Durians. Start with the "normal" beef then progressing in 1 or 2 step towarsds the A5.
200g of A5 may be too much from a cost perspective. Since most of us are meat lovers and I believe some will prefer a mix to bring the cost down to something easier to swallow. ;-)
Yes indeed. Look out for it in September!
Look out for the USDA Prime Dry Aged Steak after this Japanese beef promo!
It was my first time attending such a makan event, and I felt a bit apprehensive at first as I was not really a "makan pro" and was attending alone. But the organisers were great, and everything turned out fine. Will definitely attend again if opportunity arises, and this time round let's see whether I can convince more of my friends to join me. But first, let me figure out this facebook thingy... ^^;
Its always nice to meet up with like minded people, ie. those who love good food. : )
Good to meet you Callandor. We are not pros lah, just people who like food. Hope to see you at the next outing!
HI Callandor, I wont dare say I am a Facebook expert. I do go into Facebook daily. If you have any queries, u can drop me a private message in the Forum my nick is Botakmamasan :)
Les, would also be posting In Prompto Makan Sessions but only at the Twitter http://twitter.com/ieatishoot, you can click on this link to check daily or simply create a twitter account to follow his "thread". Again if u need help in setting it up, PM me :)
Cheers
My first time joining a makan session. Total newbie when it comes to beef steak (no prior wagyu exposure too). So my table-mates were extremely surprised that I came.
It was a gamble. I was a bit nervous because if I can't feel the difference between a $20 steak and $100 the disappointment (aka post-ripped-off stress) would haunt me for some time. But luckily it was uber good. The meat was so tender and complemented perfectly by the fat that melts in your mouth without making you jelak.
Sigh of relief and contentment after the meal. Beef steaks won't taste the same again.
so glad your experience was so enjoyable porkie pie !
yes, sometimes it pays to take risks.... = )
Hmm... I wonder who Collandor and Porkie Pie are at the lunch... Why don't both of you also register as members in the forum and we can all more? There's a community of nice foodies there. : )
Hi PorkiePie - very glad that you took the step of faith and attended anyway.. only problem now would be having this new benchmark..
Pity I couldn't come since it was during lunch..
Hope to see you at other makan sessions.
Cheers
Ah yes, the first time I tried Wagyu I also had the same reaction! It really is very different from your normal beef steak!
This A5 steak is a quantum leap in steak for me. I'm no expert but I found it really quite special. : )
