It's been a year since I first met Liverpool and blogged about his Ciabatta and Kaya Toast. How time flies. Ever since our first meeting, we have been tossing around ideas on what else would Singaporeans like to eat with their Kopi and Teh C.
If you all have been following the blog, you would know that I'd choose a good old fashion cup of Kopi over Cafe Latte anyday. In fact, our polls showed that 46.7% of those polled also prefer Kopi compared with 32.5% who like western style coffee. There have been so many occasions when I am having Cheesecake or Croissant that I wished I could have a cup of Kopi rather than a Cappuccino. Liverpool felt the same way too. So we have been discussing all sorts of stuff that we would love to eat with a cup of Kopi and one of them was freshly baked scones.
So after the idea had been brewing for almost a year, Liverpool finally shifted to his new premises in Chinatown Point installed a new oven and produced his first tray of freshly baked scones!

I have always liked scones since my trip to Bath in England. Slapping on some strawberry jam and clotted cream onto freshly baked, piping hot scones has always been my idea of the perfect afternoon tea. Now I can have it with my cup of Teh C which is even better!
The scones here are light and fluffy but the problem is that there was no clotted cream! (Liverpool's thinking about it). However, the plus side is that you can have it with Kaya if you wanted. 4/5 (gotta get the clotted cream man!)
If you like you Kopi, you have to try the Kopi here. After going around tasting the various famous Kopi places, I would have to say that the Kopi here ranks as one of the best around. Seriously, I am not just saying this to help him promote his Kopi because he is my friend. I like his Kopi because it is smooth, creamy and fragrant with very little bitterness or acidity. It is just the way I like it. Not only I say, but you can ask any of the "Uncles" sitting around who come three times a day to get their Kopi fix! 4.5/5
Conclusion
Only place in Singapore I know of that you can get freshly baked scones with Kopi and Teh C. And if you pride yourself as a Kopi lover, you should come try the Kopi here and see if you agree with my verdict.
Update: 19 Oct 2011
They will be moving to Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green Community Centre, 20 Upper Pickering St S(058284). Business should start next month.

Been there last week. It was in the evening. I will agree with ieat that the taste of the Kopi is really nice and smooth, but i personally feel it could be better if it were to be served hotter. (it was lukewarm probably because it was going to close soon, im not sure). but ya it tasted nice.
I'll have to come visit.. when i come home from Canada.. ;)
I believe when the water is too hot, it may burnt the kopi and gives off a 'off taste' entry. However, this is one cuppa that wont go wrong... Keep it up!!!!
thanks for the recommendation! i also a person with "kopi-gian".
hey liverpool,
sorry, haven't got e time to really go to ur cafe yet! but i promise i'll drop by n hopefully, can see u there! ;)
e scones look super delicious! =)
sure Khim!, am usually there till 3pm, currently making my scones in 2 batches, one around 11.30am and the other after 2pm, if you want them fresh out of the oven... :)
Hi Liverpool,
I think you Kopi is the best in Singapore!!! dont know about JB and Batam but certainly best in Singapore for me...
My wish is for you to also serve thick raisin toast. hee hee...
Blessed Christmas!
wow! thanks so much for e info! ;)
i'll sure go there to find u, when e weather is better.. recently always drizzling, quite hard to go out of office.. =(
i've finally tried e kopi n scones on wed!! =)
bought kopi for my colleagues too n all agreed tat e kopi were good! 1 lady mentioned tat it's just wat she liked - thick yet not too sweet..
for me, i'm not a kopi lover (prefer tea), but i still find e kopi very smooth.. =)
e scones were good too.. wif only a small problem - it is a tad too expensive for a small scone at $1.80?
thanks for coming by Khim! glad you liked the coffee! :) I sell the plain scones at $1.50 with jams, mixed fruit scones at $1.80, cranberry/raspberry at $2.00..my butter prices have gone up from $1.35 last year to $1.80 a few months ago and up to $2.25 a month ago! trying to source for another supplier without compromising on the quality...will let you know... :)
Be more accepting now, if our favourite hawkers have to increase the price of their food or reduce the food portion. For one who loves to bake, it's really hurting when a piece of butter now cost $3.00 as compared to $2.40 a month ago!Hearing alot of grouses from hawkers who face margin squeeze yet hands tight on price because of stiff competition....
boh lui lang mm zai jiak simi..
what i was trying to say, seller & buyers suffers but the poor so cham gets the worst hit.
yes, i like e coffee! but next time i'm gonna try e tea! ;) i'm sure i'm gonna luv it! =)
oh dear! it's gone up by so much? but i like e fruity ones! =)
just tat i think tat day i bought too much for myself!! =p
will drop by next week again! =)
Hullo,
I visited Bryan (?) like a few times liao , I must say that the coffee is nice & fresh , very well balanced , ( let me qualify what I mean by balanced, the coffee is not overly watered down by hot water and the coffee itself is not too thick that all you taste is the strong coffee taste and not the milk )
So far, I have not gotten a "stale" batch of coffee... which happens when the coffee is brewed and then left on the burner for too long, which results in a bitter aftertaste in your mouth
HOWEVER , I still prefer my Flat white /expressos /
regards
Mark
i tried e teh today!!!
oh my god!! it's fantastic!!! =)
it's very pang n not too sweet.. just like going to mr. teh tarik drinking tea tarik minus e super sweetness!! (meaning to say mr. teh tarik teh is way toooo sweet lar! not e teh here is super shiok!!)
i think i can go to drink teh everyday. (liverpool, can discount discount a bit for "members" or not?! everytime take-away extra 10 cents very siong lei.. i bring my own cup next time?! wahahaha... =p)
but i must say, ur teh is really very very good!! =) its thick yet not too sweet, just e way i like it! ;)
thanks for the compliment Khim!, you should try Killiney's teh(the original stall), the best I have tried so far...my take-away cups are a lot bigger than the cups at the cafe! :)..sure bring your own containers..no prob...:) glad you liked the tea!..
haha.. liverpool, just joking for those comments in brackets lar!! ;)
The Teh is shiok! Talk to the owner that day says that business is better at Majestic (previous location) but have observe that business is really picking up!
Hey, I was there 2pm. Had coffee black and a scone. Plain one now $1.80. Zanzoo, I think when coffee is left to sit on warmer for too long, we would have "sourish" coffee, is it not? My kaki and I found it "sourish". Scone was bit "floury", no butter taste even though I slathered on the whole dollop that came with the scone. Margarine?
IMHO, Liverpool, QC required, perhaps?
I gave the same comments when I 1st visited and had their scones. There was no butter taste to it and tasted like super duper healthy scones. I had it when it was out fresh so it tasted fresh and very healthy and wholesome for me. Was there just last Sunday and at 4:30pm they ran out of scones already. Coffee was good that day and my mum liked her teh c. Business was brisk :)
thanks for dropping by chaozhouzi! :), did I make the cuppa for you or did a lady? :)...2pm is a good time to visit, crowds would have gone and coffee would still be fresh? will QC QC, I actually use 150g of butter for every 750g of flour, any more and the scones will not be light enough, no magarine at my cafe..the plain scones are still $1.50, $1.80 for the mixed fruit ones. Drop by again, will buy you a round the next time! :)...and jems too! :)
hmm no leh? I vaguely remembered I was charged $1.80 for a plain scone and that is the price on the menu no? Was also told that your server that the cafe only normally bakes plain scones?
I guess you should highlight "vaguely" jems....its $1.50 for plain period....
ya that's why I said vaguely, but your menu states only scones is $1.80 right? Or is that my error too? If that's the case that might be where the confusion went?
ai ya.. liverpool.. u so biased!! i go ur cafe few times u also never buy me a round!! got bring my friends there too, u know?! =p
Liv65, How is the cheng tng? when u cooking tua suan? Remember lots of yiu tiao.
Khim, u like tua suan? I buy u a bowl at Nanyang if Liv65 confirm cooking tua suan.OK lah add a cup of kopi/tea yr choice.
eh you have too many admirers Khim, no need to buy you... :), uncle smart, cheng tng every Mon, Wed and Fri only...
Thanks for the recommendation. Enjoyed the toast there~~
I come to this place at least ten times already and so far it never disappoints me. I like the kopi (and its consistency) so much. No sourish taste. Right mix on the kopi, sugar and milk. Keep up the good work =)
PS: Pardon me for the corny pen name :p
Can't wait to go back there for another round of coffee. I wished u were located nearer my home or office.
Hey, dont have the tau suan party without me okay?
i've tried e cheng tng today!
but it's more like "white fungus soup" instead as 80% of e ingredient is white fungus. there's ginkgo nuts, sago & dried longans too..
but e ginkgo nuts were slightly bitter as e "heart" was not removed.
i like e sago!! it's so soft & chewy!!! y can't all bubble tea shops have sago so nice??
e soup sweetness is just nice! i like it!
=)
next will be e tau suan! =p
i went there today. I wanted to try the scones but it was sold out! sianz
Hey Liverpool, is de nanyang at Golden shoe 3rd floor yours as well? Have to admit, this morning was my first time trying de kopi... and de staff knew i was a first timer! Wa... my face was written 'first timeoall over meh?!' hahaha.. anyway, de kopi was superb.. i like it de way it is, except dat it could be slightly warmer than lukewarm.. i like my morning kopi hot.. JMHO
the golden shoe carpark stall is nicely done up, afraid its not a branch of mine angela :), hmmm will check out on the coffee, it should be hot not warm! drop by again, the next cuppa on me! :)
Congratulation! this show your Good Morning Nanyang has a good reputation that copy cats are coming.
Nothing beats the original at Chinatown Point. Watch out!! Starbucks!!! ; )
I don't want to sound naggy but my neck is long waiting for your tao suan...
Oh dear Liverpool... I thot it was urs... but de kopi is good...
So there're several 'nanyang's around... Cham laio... which one is yours then?
Why dun u state all ur outlet addys so dat I noe if I am helping to bring up ur revenue too... kekekeke
I can help him answer this question. His one and only store is Good Morning Nanyang Cafe at Chinatown Point. : )
thanks for the kind comments uncle smart, cactuskit, I also copycat lah...ya kun, killiney.. :)....there is also a Nanyang Toast at Guillemard Road, haven't tried that yet... care to join me anyone? you can visit me at Chinatown Point, am just above Mouth Restaurant on the third floor
Aiyo, so many things to try out, got da chang and now this nanyang kopi. However I read with interest that you serve smooth coffee which I love. Today just had Vietnamese coffee from satchet given by a friend; It's aromatic and most people like it but I still find it too thin. I also love good scones with fresh cream and jam and ooo lah lah, I think I gonna like this.
Where do you procure your milk from hur? haha :)
Malaysia Dairy Industries ice! :)
hey!i just tried the coffee and orange cibitta toast yestersay.it was AWESOME!
too bad i didn't get to try the fruit scones.I only tried the plain ones.Anyone knows when they have the fruit scones? :)
thanks for dropping by Adeline!, will let you know when I start making the fruit scones again, glad you liked the coffee and orange ciabatta! :)
hey!i went back agn to the cafe!think i'm addicted alrdy!haha.tried the milk tea and kaya ciabatta this time!it was just as yummy!just some suggestions though, maybe you could introduce some new flavours like peanut butter and tuna?haha.anyway, its a great cafe! :)
Hi Liverpool,
I finally managed to visit your Cafe! Ordered a Teh-C "Kao" and the Orange Ciabatta. I love it that it was really light and not cloying.
However, I did find that the Teh-C was not thick nor smooth enough. A tad diluted.
Although I am not a milk coffe drinker, I will try it since it comes highly-recommended. The scones too - are they still baked in 2 batches? I really want to eat it when it just comes out from the oven - am a 'sucker' for freshly baked!
By the way, is the nasi lemak procured or prepared by the cafe?
Hope to see you the next time!
Yohomogi
thanks for dropping by yohomogi!, scones are usually ready around 10:30am :), the nasi lemak is from a supplier...yes the tea's a bit diluted today, my apologies...have been trying out boh's and lipton's the last few days to compare with my supplier's, using their tea leaves instead of tea dust....let me know when you drop by again! :)
Hi Liverpool,
My next visit shall be very soon.. hopefully on Friday, but I shall time it to the scones!!
Yohomogi :)
hi, i ate the kaya toast set at their chinatown pt outlet.. i prefer ya kun though..
their tea is good..
however, their soft-boiled eggs are not up to standard sadly, it isn't nicely done..
their kaya toast is not bad.. pt to note, they serve generous amt of kaya on the bread.. so if u like it with a lot of kaya.. this is for u..
thanks for the feedback koreanlove, will try to improve on the soft boiled eggs, were they over or under done? :)
sorry guys but we cant even locate the cafe. Is it in chinatown point or Hong Lim Complex. we went lv 3 and most of the shops are closed on sunday and washroom is so diffcult to find. Can you gv instructions how to get to your cafe as we enter the main building. I think we saw a delifrance on the ground floor.Y you dont serve laksa or mee siam for the hungry customers lol like the toastbox biz model. Maybe shd locate in a yuppies neighbourhood. You know yuppies like to chill out in cafes. my wishlist is to go to a cafe which has a mini set like sandwiches, scones, carrot cake, fruit cake n tea for maybe $6. If butter X then make chiffon cake. If have cookies the kids will love it.
White Orchid: If you saw Delifrance (and probably Coffee Bean) on the ground floor, you were in the right building — Chinatown Point. Go up the escalator. You will see a lingerie shop on your right, and the cafe is on the left. Better jot down Byron/liverpool1965's no. in case you get lost again: 81331882. Or just ask at the info counter on the ground floor for directions.
Liverpool1965: I was there on Thursday. The eggs were kinda overdone, and I had to dig out some of the egg whites with the spoon. It wasn't as watery or runny as the first time I tried it (4-6 months ago?). I was a bit disappointed, haha. Just to clarify, I'm not koreanlove; dunno about his/her eggs being overdone or underdone.
I went there wanting kopi, but ended up ordering teh as it smelt so good. Friend and I had the orange ciabatta which was pretty tasty; I'll order this again. The iced kopi was really fragrant, too (had a sip of my friend's and ordered it myself for round 2). I honestly wouldn't mind having this over Starbucks any day, but the location makes it impossible for me, alas.
thanks Just A Passerby, next time let us know about the eggs! will gladly replace them! :)
White Orchid, shouldn't have any problems finding the cafe now! :)
hi liverpool,
i love your orange ciabatta. was thinking if it is possible to include egg ciabatta or roast chicken or tuna ciabatta other than kaya, peanut or jam ?
thanks
nice to know that you love the orange ciabatta! yes will look into what you suggested!
Wanted to go secretly. But I still got recognized. :P
So I guess liverpool would be looking for this:
http://sweetlynice.blogspot.com/2010/04/good-morning-nanyang-cafe-fusion-of.html
People, it's really very good leh! Must eat orange ciabatta, drink kopi. And very good service from liverpool and family (I guess). Finally got a decent place (other than McD and the likes) for me to rest in Chinatown.
The orange and coffee are inspirational. Another dimension altogether.
And I notice Good Morning Nanyang actually already has quite a following of regular customers. =)
Hard not to recognise you after the number of posts you have in the blog and forum Jyoan!... :)...thought you only had the teh-O and normal toast! :)
haha, because I managed to stay secret at first.
thanks for dropping by! and thanks for the review on your blog!...you were the second person who noticed a burnt taste in the coffee...will let my supplier know... :)
Hi all,
Glad to know that all of us are really excited about good coffee which always make our day.
Having read the numerous reviews about Nanyang cafe, I was 99.9% sure that it was really worth the trip.
So yesterday, off I went to get a very dear gf of mine, a true-blue coffee addict and braved the weather, drove into the CBD, try v hard to find a car park. I had sepecifically insisted that she needed to take time off work and try this very very much reviewed and highly acclaimed coffee joint which is one of the ebst in SGP!
Im sorry but I have to share that the experience at Nanayang cafe was really not what I expected and i guess it might just be a once-off incident.
Firstly, after my order, the China sales girl gave me the wrong order when I have clearly- and I double-checked with my friend who went with me and her colleague who was manning the cashier and both said I did order kopi-C and not teh-c. She still replied me and said".. but you ordered teh-c wat" when i said isnt my order something else. And she hastily and unhappily went to make a cup for me after my 2 confirmations. And I wouldnt have minded the equally acclaimed teh-c if not for the very pale colour of the drink, nothing at all like what some have posted on their website, which obviously had a richer tea taste.
Secondly, I tried the orange ciabatte which was not really hot and the bread was a bit hard (as though it was not baked to properly. And the kaya filling quite little and it was definitely nothing like that which was ozzing out for some of you.
Initially wanted to try the scones as well but decided against that as our experience was already marred by the experience this far.
Having said all this, I think it was really just a once off incident and do trust that nanyang cafe is still as enjoyable for some of you.
Hi Anonymous, my apologies for your terrible experience at my cafe!...my regulars would usually tell me to lightly toast the ciabattas and not add too much kaya! I will be speaking to my staff tomorrow on the way they have handled your visit to my cafe. Please call me at 81331882 and I trust that you'll allow me to make up for your experience.
Regards
Byron
is there any new items added to the menu? thanks.
afraid not anonymous, what would you suggest we should add on? I don't have any exhaust outlets in the cafe, can't do heavy cooking.
congrat to your opening of new outlet. was thinking of egg /chicken/tuna sandwiches as i cant take kaya or peanut butter. :(
Hi
dropped by GMNC over the weekend, and i must say that it was a pleasant experience. i hope it stays that way.
The ciabattas were great+fresh — with the home-made kaya, it was even better. Keep it up.
I'll drop by for scones the next time
thanks for dropping by Pat! let me know when you're visiting again! :)
went by a few times, the coffee is nice and fragrant while the yuan yang was really smooth. :)
perhaps I've started drinking coffee with espresso so I found the coffee here a bit weak for me but still a nice cup! :D
thanks for the comments jemmer!, next time try the gao version! :)
Decided to forgo Fullerton COurtyard and give Nayang a try on their scones as well as their tea & kopi.
Reached there about 4pm with my wife, no trouble in finding this nicely tugged at a corner, just beside the escalator shop.
To our surprise, there is a crowd and sitting area is big inside.
Anyway, ordered two plain scones (one for my wife and one for me), tea (my wife) and teh-c (myself).
Verdict:
Environment - airy & comfortable
Service - Self Service though
Tea/TehC - abit diluted, not fragant enough (should have tried their Kopi instead)
Scones - Fluffy & fresh, so much better than the ones we had at Jones. Should have clotty cream though.
Will i go again - Yes

Hey Leslie & Byron,
Great to meet you both on Hari Raya Holiday.
First time having the Ciabatta Orange Toast, it was indeed delicious, soft & crispy. That's why I came back again during the weekend with my friends, and tried thick toast as well since my friend recommended that. It's equally nice!
I've written a blog (http://daifeijay.blogspot.com/2011/09/good-morning-nanyang-cafe.html) to share my food experience here & photoshots. :) Photos speak the words, haha...
Great day & keep in touch!
