One of the commonest feedback I get from readers is whether I ever blog overrated food, or food that is not a 4 or above. The simple answer is "Yes, but not too much!" (Reminds me of an old Ribena ad!). I try my best to scour the forums to find all the good stuff, 'cos I really don't need to waste my calories on untasty food and neither should you, especially when you are beginning to realise that your belt is starting to hold up your belly instead of your pants!
Now, I am very careful about saying that something is "bad" because, as they say, taste is very subjective. But when it comes to Pontian Wanton Mee, it seems to divide us all into those who love it and those who really think it is overrated. It like the "Durian Phenomenon", very few would really be found sitting on the fence.

The group of us were on the "don't really know what the fuss is about" side of the fence. I personally think that the only thing I do like about it is the noodles which are all made in house. The texture was very good and the noodles tasted quite good by itself. What really dissappointed us was the bright red, synthetic looking sauce, the dry and uninspiring Char Siew and the tiny wantons! One bowl shared among 4 persons and 3/4 bowl was left because we all did not want to waste our calories on it! 3/5
Hey if you really love it, please leave a comment and tell us why!

tried that before, i think other than the noodles are different, nothing much
i guess the noodles are springy, that make whole lot of difference as compared to other stalls. even thought the sauce looks too red for comfort, i like the spicy and sweet taste to it. i do agree that the wanton is nothing to boast about.
agree with you. I don't like it at all. But hubby loves it and would eat it everytime he is at Bedok Interchange!
The noodles remain QQ and firm to the bite even after i ta pau it home.
Credits to that only.
I must say it's much better than the other wanton noodle that are rated highly. At least I don't think it's overrated, although I don't think it's the best. The so call 'synthetic-looking' sauce actually taste nice in my opinion.
Wanton noodle can actually be served in many styles (Cantonese Style, Johor/Ipoh/KL Style, Singapore Style) so this might happens to be the style you don't like!
If I remember correctly, there are two stalls. One sells in the morning, the other in the evening. I try the evening stall and it cannot compare to the real Pontian version. Its not even 10% close.
The Pontian stall to eat is called 8383, its now run by the 3rd generation and they starts only at 2pm. My uncles have been eating it since they were kids. Funny thing is that if you tak pao, its 50 sens cheaper! My uncle jokingly said its because you don't get the soup.
don't ever take it with the chilli. eat it original. just the sauce. that's the typical malaysia style. i missed the taste. this is the typical wanton mee style u'll get in malaysia. w/o chilli tho!
happen to pass by today think they close dw liao
Tried it last Sunday. Fried wanton is nice.. think they added some type of fish. Abit too oily..
I find this wan ton noodles rather sweet(not what i would look for in wan ton noodles).I prefer the salty soya sauce based ones.
this wanton mee is not bad....eat 2 bowls .... Love the noodles wit the black sauce........... did not try the noodle with the red sauce.........
Liar...this is not the Pontian wanton noodles. I m from Pontian but our hometown wanton mee is not in this way i can assure with this. Frankly talk, i even saw a stall at Toa Payoh Central write with a banner in "PONTIAN WANTON MEE", but the taste did not even familiar at all, really quite disappointed with it. Singapore have too many pirated stall like IPOH HO FUN, KAJANG satay and etc. Feel like being cheated by the stall.
Hey do u know that there is another Pontian noodle stall at Redhill Market? That one to me is quite okay. I hope i will be able to try this particular pontian noodle stall at bedok interchange and then compare it to the one at Redhill market :)
This Pontian Wan Tan Mee is definitely not the real deal. It looks horrible to me even from the photo.
Besides going to Pontian town in Johor to try out the authentic Pontian Wan Tan Mee, fellow sporeans can go to Gelang Patah Johor (near second link) where there is a Pontian Wan Tan Mee stall which is selling authentic wan tan mee from Pontian.
It is the real deal as the stall owner also from Pontian.
My mum is from Pontian so I actually know what REAL Pontian Wanton Noodles are like. The noodles from all these stalls in Singapore don't come close to the real thing at all. For one, the wanton shouldn't be fried- that's disgusting. The wanton skins used aren't from Pontian. While the first few stalls in Singapore claiming to sell Pontian wanton noodles did get their supply of the noodles from the actual store in Malaysia (because they make their own noodles), the owners have now stopped supplying them after seeing how bad the Singaporean version is. It pains me to see people lining up for 30 minutes for noodles that are a travesty of the real thing.
To the author of this blog: do yourself a favour, drive up to Pontian during the weekend, and try out the real deal. The noodle shop is called "Heng Heng" (兴兴) Like one post above mentioned, the 8383 stall in Pontian is pretty good too.
What a rant!! Haha. National pride+food= 5 minutes of my life typing this comment when I should be studying.
Do people line up for this??? I have never seen a queue. I did not even notice this stall until one day I wanted to eat wanton mee there.
In any case, what is the complain about? NOBODY is raving about it.
Either you leave your name or you should seriously go and study and yes, like you say, don't waste your time, since nobody is wasting their time queuing nor wasting their time insisting that this is Pontian.
So every April you come back to this blog to check if people have tasted so called true Pontian Wanton Mee.
If you really want us to know, then for goodness sake ask your mother to open a stall or you open a stall here and kill all our fake pontian wanton mee. How about that? We welcome good food anytime, so no worries.
Plain ranting isn't going to help anything. Perhaps Anonymous should be changed to annoying. They look the similar.
Another suggestion, why not start a blog about the best foods in Malaysia then show us that wanton mee? Talk about national pride... ...
I might just do that! Thanks for the info
The complaint (spelled with a T) dear Jyoan, is not that anybody is raving about it, nor that there are any lines for the Singaporean version(at least last July I did see people lining up at the Amoy Street Food Centre stall), but because what we get here is a sorry misrepresentation of the real thing. Look at it this way, if some dude from the States tried some Americanized version of Hainanese Chicken Rice (served sweet and sour style for example),and went on to rave/bitch about it, we'd consider it pretty sacrilegious wouldn't we? Because I, like many other readers of this blog, are passionate about food. Didn't we Singaporeans even get into a little (though silly) quarrel with Malaysia over the origins of some dishes?
And what does leaving my name have to do with anything? If I had left my name as Myary (extra 'y' as a nod to you Jyoan:) )Tan or Linus van Pelt would it have lent any more (or less) credibility to my post? Requesting for names is pretty pointless where the Internet is concerned.
The fact is, I really do want you guys to know about the real thing, which is why I bothered to point out the difference between the Singaporean and original versions, and even left the name of the noodle stall should you ever be inclined to drive up to Pontian.
And obviously, I'm not the same "Anonymous" who wrote the post above, even though I think 8383 noodles are good too.
Yes, talk about national pride. As a Singaporean, I am proud of the fact that my mummy is Malaysian. And nah, blogging isn't really my cup of tea- I'd much prefer to rant and threaten to kill food :)Because if I could, vile chicken nuggets would be the first on my list.
To ieat: You should- and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! And sorry for spamming this board-this will be my 2nd and last post on this topic.
Hi Charlie Brown, thanks for your comments and for using a name. As you correctly pointed out, anyone can put up a phantom name on the internet. But you also pointed out that you are not the same Anonymous that wrote another post. So having a name for us to know who is writing what is useful. I hope you stick to Charlie Brown, I think it suits you! After a while, whenever I see Charlie Brown, I will remember it is the one who wrote about Pontian Wantan Mee. Hope to hear more from you in another post!
I've tried the noodles in Singapore and i think it's really great. I'm a regular and a fan of Pontian wanton mee in Singapore ~
Be it authentic or not... It's nice, so who cares ?
If there's nothing special about it...than what's the long queue for ?
I believe everyone has their own perception.
Different people different taste.
I did ask the people there before, and they actually told me they used to get supply from *heng heng ( as what you said, the real Pontian Mee ) ,but as business in Singapore Pontian Noodle starts to grow, Heng heng increase the price and supply them with lower standard quality. Also , they used to be exactly the same as Pontian noodle in Pontian but business doesnt turned out well and SINGAPOREANS cannot accept the JOHOR taste. So, they improvisd.Anyway it's first hand information.
I'm not sure where your info came from got business who dont wanto do ?
If i can supply the pontian wanton noodle in Singapore , why not ? I get to earn even more because they are expanding.I will just have to keep my quality good. But too bad, i don't have the fortune to be their supplier.
and from your : the owners have now stopped supplying them after seeing how bad the Singaporean version is.
Dont you think your words are contradicting ?
How bad for the Singapore version...isnt it need to link back to the supplier ?
i happen to love the Pontian wanton noodles found in Spore. I think it is a chain now cos I see it in many hawker centres. What i love about it: the texture of the noodle and the dark soya sauce with it! It is nicely Q and doesn't stick to the gums/teeth as some wanton noodles do. That's how i love my wanton noodles. If anyone has found a better "textured" dark sauce wanton noodle elsewhere in Spore, please let me know. I would love to try. So far, this is the closest to the Malaysian ones I could find in Spore. I would recommend it in black sauce, non-spicy. Also can't resist the ultra thin skinned fried wanton! :)
I have just tried it.
YES I think it is OVER-RATED.
There is really nothing special in this noodle.
To be frank, I am also a food critic. This Pontian Wan Tan Mee cannot make it lar. Cold, Sour, the only good thing is that the Mee is springy! Nothing to shout for, I still prefer the East Coast one!!
no wonder the noodle taste become so bad after 1 year eating at Jurong West. Their Boon Lay stall also closed, no business, lol. I eat for 1 year but nowadays I stopped. The noodle standard became so poor. The wanton sometimes taste rotten.
After seeing and hearing so much about Pontian wanton mee in Singapore, I went to Pontian yesterday to it check out at its birthplace. Unfortunately, 3 of the 4 most famous shops were closed for Ching Ming. Luckily, Heng Heng was opened. Tried it and I LOVE IT very much ;D
Sharing my take on Heng Heng, the Pontian wanton mee stall that started it all.
